Kindles are better for ebooks ... my wife loves hers. The big plus for kindles is that the battery lasts and last in comparison with reading books on a tablet. Really depends if they would use the extra functionality that a tablet would provide or just want a bag friendly eBook reader that they don't have to charge daily. Sorry if that's not much help but that's the main differences. |

If he really likes to read a lot and already had a Kindle, another Kindle would be the best. But maybe he'll manage to get a replacement, Amazon support is quite nice even in such cases. Tablets are really not optimal for longer reading times. You have 4 Kindle models to chose from: basic wi-fi/touch wi-fi/touch 3g/keyboard 3g. Each of them gives the same reading experience, they differ in additional features. Find out what he had that may help you choose. But I'd say touch wi-fi is a safe middle of the road choice.

Ereaders are better for battery life (7 or more days) and reading the screen in daylight.
Tablets are better for functionality and reading in the dark. But battery life is poor (8hrs or less). I prefer Ereaders that can read Epubs, so I can get books from other sources. Tablets are better for PDFs IMO as well. |

Kindle has no SD slot, but when you connect them with USB cable to PC they map as a disk drive and you copy the books on them. The internal storage is enough for thousands of books. If your friend bought books from amazon already, you should go for Kindle again. There's DRM protection and there's incompatible formats mobi vs epub. It all can be solved, DRM stripped, formats converted, but staying with the same (class of) reader is the easiest way.

If your friend had a kindle then the likelihood is that he has lots of books bought from amazon that only work on the kindle (unless he wants to try and rip the drm)
When he logs on to the new kindle with his amazon account he will be able to redownload all his books and the location he was at in the books via WiFi, no computer needed. |

If it's just for reading the Kindle will be best everytime as the screen is purely designed for reading for hours at a time and so much more comfortable to read.

Buy a cover - simple. If you don't want to stretch to Amazon's slightly pricey covers, there are plenty of third party covers available. There's a nice Teknet cover available from Amazon, for under £8, which gives you protection all over. I've had my official Amazon lighted cover for my Kindle Keyboard since day one, and the Kindle is still in perfect condition.
