RIP iGoogle

Why?
I and many of my friends use it - maybe we're past our sell-by date too

The official Google explanation

I've only ever played with iGoogle, never used it as it should have been. Seems like this is the case for most people.

Same here, and has been since BBC changed their layout. Still, it's not going for over a year, so at least we get plenty of notice.

Really annoyed by this. Use this a lot. What more can you ask for, a search engine for your homepage, but with all your favourite things on it. YouTube, BBC news and sport, Sky Sports, currency convertor and anything else you wish to have on one page.

This has really hacked me off. I've been using it for years now and it's the only one that has everything I need, is easy to use and doesn't make collating your various info a massive chore.

Here's hoping they reconsider Not everyone has a mobile device stuck to their face 24/7. Some of us use these things called computers.

I use it on my phone too. It's so quick to just load the browser up on my phone and have iGoogle pop up with everything I have on it. Takes seconds to check what I want to check. Really do hope they reconsider this.

That's not what Google think in their infinite wisdom and they're never wrong

Matt Eichner, general manager of Global Enterprise Search, said in a blog post.
"With modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android, the need for iGoogle has eroded over time"

Any good alternatives to iGoogle then ?
I like it a lot and can't see why they are dumping it.

We originally launched iGoogle in 2005 before anyone could fully imagine the ways that today's web and mobile apps would put personalized, real-time information at your fingertips. With modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android, the need for something like iGoogle has eroded over time, so we’ll be winding down iGoogle on November 1, 2013, giving you a full 16 months to adjust or easily export your iGoogle data.

Yes I had read that, but it seems that Google (like Microsoft with Windows 8) is of the opinion that everyone uses touch devices/tablets etc. with statements like "With modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android...".
I have news for them - they don't!

Interesting to note that the link given (in the above link) no longer works http://saveigoogle.com/ but there is a petition here http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/...webportal.html

What is it people like about iGoogle anyway? Isn't it effectively just some webpages in "frames"? We used to make our own at uni 15 years ago!

I suppose it is, but for most people (including myself) it's an easy,hassle-free way of getting what you want in one place - mail/weather/maps/reminders/currency converter etc.etc etc
without any knowledge of making webpages

i don't see the point in these portals like Igoogle and Yahoo.

Was it not igoogle that had some iffy gadgets or what ever they are called on their screen? I know of someone whose daughters company had all sorts of problems with Igoogle because one of their gadgets was defective.

I have iGoogle as my home page on my PCs and have done since 2007. I suppose I don't spend a lot of time on the page before moving into other sites but it's a nice place to start with weather, calendar, etc widgets that have been quite useful over the years. I'll be sad to see it go, I don't know what will be my home page after it shuts down, I suppose it'll just end up being the standard Google search page which is a bit boring to be honest.

Same. I've poked around with some of the alternatives and none of them fit quite as well (especially because no one has a Google reader window where all my feeds sit together) but so far Protopage looks to be the winner in simplicity and function.
