There was more than a touch of Sam Seaborn in the "We used to reach for the stars" part of the diatribe.

I hope folk stick with the show, HBO / Showtime shows tend to spend five or six episodes building character and introducing a plot and then build to a season finale which is usually where the action happens. Every season of Dexter for the first six episodes the forum is moaning about how it's jumped the shark or lost the plot and should be cancelled and then for the last four episodes most are saying how great it is.
I am not sure that is particularly true of this season though

I would also say Aaron Sorkin is constantly building on his characters through out his shows right to the end. But often establishes characters straight away so that they are instantly relatable.

you're probably right but Sorkin hasn't worked for cable tv before so it could be.
TWW usually built up to a dramatic season finale and often with strong story arcs, the illness or the election.
But on Network tv with 22 episodes to play with he didn't have to be quite so arc driven. HBO / Showtime like arc driven tv, so I'm expecting there to be one although I've only seen one episode so far.
Obviously Sorkin won't neglect the characters, it's his forte and I expect there to be plenty of character driven content also.

I actually meant Dexter with the bit you quoted.

As for Sorkin, I am not sure he is one to compromise his artist integrity as it were. He won't be bullied by networks to change how he writes a story. There will be an arc though, there is an arc in most shows now without an arc there is no forward momentum and the show stagnates.

But yeah "I am not sure that is particularly true of this season though" was talking about Dexter rather than this show

ah, fair point. The last season of Dexter was probably the weakest, still looking forward to the next one though should be interesting.

I am sticking with it - since it is down to its last couple of seasons now. But I am not looking forward to it as much, I mean after season 4 I was looking forward to seeing it and was let down by season 5 and 6, Julia Stiles has never really impressed me so I didn't even get excited by her like so many others seemed to have done.

So no not looking forward to it as much - thank God for the books is all I can say.

But I still thought they were better than most shows. Also it is season 5 when Aaron Sorkin left West Wing.
The only Newsrooms/TWW cast link I've spotted so far is John Gallagher (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0302330/) who appeared in Twenty Hours in America at the start of season 4 as school kid (which just shows how long ago TWW was made!)

Maybe this is a deliberate policy to use a totally a different set of actors as Sportsnight, TWW and S60 had many crossovers.

God yes he is the "on my girlfriend's life your troubles end 98 miles right down that track" kid. I thought I recognised him from something just couldn't place it.

Most writers and directors tend to get actors who they like to be in other things Joshua Malina was in loads of his stuff, A few good Men, American President, Sports Night, and the West Wing from the top of my head. Just like Nolan finds someone then they are with him until he finds his next big actor crush

Am looking forward to watching the series. We saw Jane Fonda and Sam Waterson filming some of this when we were in New York in May.

Ok, since i'm BfB, I wanted to say that I watched this on Anytime on Sunday and I loved it. Loved the actual news report at the end with the single word "Vamp" appearing on the teleprompter.

Compelling stuff and something that's certainly now high up on my "must watch" list.

Just watched this on anytime. Being a big fan of west wing. Thought it was a good first ep. So nice to see a show that doesn`t rely on sex and violence to get ratings. I wonder if some actors from west wing will end up on this?

The first episode was fantastic, but like others, I heard that the critics were really harsh on the next two episodes. But seriously, it started out incredibly well so I wait and judge it for myself. I've also been watching The West Wing at the same time, too. I used to watch Sports Night when it was on in the morning on Channel 4 and I liked Studio 60 (that should've been on HBO or Showtime, what a shame it didn't last).

I hear the show has already been renewed for a second season. Most of the time, these cable channels know what to do with good TV (though HBO cancelled The Comeback) as opposed to the bland network channels that only two or three good shows premiering every season.

I do love Aaron Sorkin, even if he does recycle his dialogue...A LOT (I'm sure many of you have seen that video that has gone viral).

I loved it. I read what the critics said and I didn't think it would be up to much, but I really enjoyed it

Well I watched the second episode and I loved it just as much as the first episode, there was no decline for me at all. If it keeps up this level I will be watching it to its end.

Why do they all talk so fast? It annoyed me in The Social Network as well.

E02 was just as good as the first, still can't see why the mixed reviews, but yes I find the dialog difficult to keep up with ...may require subtitles ...there's so much rich Sorkin script I fear I'm missing loads of it

I really liked it. the dialogue is sharp. it's quick fire but I'm used to it form West Wing et al.
There is some chemestry building between these characters. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Well I have to say, that if the 2nd episode had been the 1st, I would've given up half-way into it.

Given I enjoyed ep1, I'll stick with it for another week.

Same here....But I did give up, after about 40 minutes of this weeks verbal onslaught....It all got on my nerves, they just didn't stop talking,{which sounds strange} But I didn't get half what they were saying.

I don't get why people are struggling with the dialogue

They're speaking English, many with English accents and the American accents are not particularly strong.
Some of the back and forth between Will and Mac was quick fire but it was still understandable. The language used is not particularly difficult nor esoteric. They did use 'Quixotic' in episode one but that's hardly a difficult word.

I did struggle a little with The Wire to know exactly what everyone was saying in every conversation. I caught the gist. But their accents were heavier and they were using slang with which I was unfamiliar.

I'm invested after two episodes. It can be a bit shouty and the dialogue can be a little too fast for my small brain but it's entertaining and interesting. Perhaps a little too idealistic but that's not neccessarily a bad thing. I thank my lucky stars for the BBC and Jeremy Paxman and other British newscasters....even Channel 5 and ITV.
