Acta Anti-piracy

Acta treaty cannot become law in EU without European Parliament approval; meaning it has effectively been killed off.

VICTORY! ACTA suffers final, humilliating defeat in Europarl by 478-39 vote. (New article)

Today at 12:56, the European Parliament decided whether ACTA would be ultimately rejected or whether it would drag on into uncertainty. In a crushing 478-to-39 vote, the Parliament decided to reject ACTA once and for all. This means that the deceptive treaty is now dead globally.

We will fight that too. This is a major win for people power and it shows that if enough us speak out, our politicians have to listen.

not really. the act was over ambitious. it was illegal under european law. that is why it's failed. they'll try again.

From what I've read, this was completely overboard and stupid anyway. Thankfully they're not getting their own way over here.

Can I ask, how did you go about fighting the ACTA proposals?

I'm delighted it was rejected. I hope no more internet bills like this pop up now. Whatever happened to the TPP?

Just learned who the 39 were that voted in favour of this. Turns out one of my very own MEPs - Bill Newton Dunn of the Liberal Democrats in the East Midlands was the only British MEP who voted in favour. Remember not to vote for him in the next European election.

Different things altogether. I'm afraid Pirate Bay is staying officially blocked.

Right ho.

Sorry if that sounded a bit facetious. It wasn't supposed to be.
I was genuinely interested to hear what was being done about it.

I've been to see my MP about various things, a couple of times, at his local surgery but, frankly, I suspect it'd be more productive to talk to my spaniel about them.

No worries. My MP is the same because he is Sinn Fein who still refuse to take their seats in Westminster.

The EU is trying to sneak ACTA into another piece of legislation.

Well that didn't last long.

A European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday that some elements of an E.U.-Canada trade deal that activists claimed infringed digital civil liberties have been removed.

Those in power won't be happy until they can come and kick down your door at will.....The biggest danger to civil liberties is apathy and ignorance....

That's good... until the next bad internet bill pops up! It's like whack-a-mole. One disappears and another pops up. What's happening with the TPP? Is that dead or has there been any news on it?

It was effective only 6 years ago as well. These groups seem to be fairly targeting 'downloaders'.
