Crucial is your friend. Here's the page for Acer Aspire 5750. There are additional pages for various versions of the 5750. Find your full model number (on the bottom of the laptop) and use the checker on Crucial's main page.

If you're running a 32bit version of Windows it's not worth upgrading as Windows wont see more than 4GB of RAM. 64bit versions of Windows or OSs that use PAE can see more RAM so an upgrade may be beneficial.

Got an 8gb ram upgrade and fitted it but it's only showing as 5gb. Is this normal ?. Laptop does seem faster though.

IMO, No this is not normal

Did you get 2 RAM Stick? Maybe they sent a 1GB & 4GB stick in error.

you can see what is in each of the slots using something like cpu-z on the spd tab
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

if windows isn't recognising it it would normally say something like 8GB (5GB available)

may be a bios thingy
