what is it with cats and computers?

i`ve just started my morning routine of gradually arranging my belongings around the computer to stop the cat walking backwards in front of the screen and keep him off my mouse hand.

WHY DO THEY BLOODY DO THAT?

had a fight to keep him from jumping on the laptop whilst typing this and lost

If the cat only does it when you are actually using the computer, its probably just being affectionate towards you, trying to get your attention / interact with you
(this is a good thing! however untimely hehe)

Pop into whatevers nearest (pet store etc) and shell out a couple quid on some cat toys (the more durable the better). A little stimulation goes a long way

One of ours has a distinct affinity for following the pointer... wether its the mouse cursor on a computer screen or just a red dot on a wall, or even shadows, including his own
its a year old and unlike our previous pets does not seem to have outgrown it

All sorts of fun if you set your computer up with a projector against a large wall :P

Be happy it does not have a "possessive" personality... literally all sorts of everyday objects he will pick up with his mouth and toddle away to dump in his cat bed with the toys... including house keys which has caused all sorts of panic!

My cat does that. Always sits on my left hand which I use for the mouse. Or if he is feeling particularly bothersome he'll walk in front of the screen and stand there. He does that with the TV too.

My cat isn't bothered with the lappy, although I use it at the dining room table and sometimes she'll jump up and have a sniff around (and a few strokes!)

When I am using lappy cat is normally asleep on one of the other dining room chairs, she likes to be around her "mummy"

I think they just want to put themselves in between you and whatever you're paying attention to. "Look at me!" Guaranteed that your cat will come and just sit on top of whatever papers or magazines you have on a desk or the floor. Also, laptops are very warm.

Many times a day my cat will position himself between me and monitor and stretch out. Still, he forces me to take a screen break (of sorts) as he purrs while I pay him some attention, so no complaints from me.

Occasionally however....

Oh yes, i'm more than familiar with this one.
Like the time i was writing a very long, strongly worded letter, he decided he wanted some attention, sat on my keyboard, and completely deleted the whole 5 paragraphs.
He got my attention alright! Little bugger.

Lol, I used to have a cat that chased the mouse/arrow on screen too- drove me bonkers! It was back when home pcs had just ecomepopualr so was probably to novelty of a new toy, I can't remember her growing out of it though!

Also had a cat that loved paperwork, o spread out to study and next thing, there'd be a ginger and white furry thing in the middle of it all, mum often found him in her open briefcase too!

My cat does that.
He might be sitting at the end of my sofa, where I sit with my PC (KB/monitor and mouse on the coffee table). Then he'll get up. He won't walk across using the floor, no....he has to wander across the coffee table, walk over my KB and then, jump off and make his way to the kitchen for his snack.
When he could quite easily just jump off the sofa straight away and walk across the carpet.

Love him to bits.

I guess you;ve all seen the cat 'talking' via a human translator to the printer..but its always funny

Yes, I think it is anything that we look at with concentration. My cats have an aversion to books that I'm reading. They will also lie down on newspapers / paperwork that I've got spread out on a table and even if I am watching tv, if I'm lying back to watch it, I get a cat on my chest gazing fixedly at my face.

Love 'em to bits, though.

cats are funny.

i have to pin mine down at arms length and stroke his belly to stop him, he`s so persistent.

i think he thinks i`m in pain when i play harmonica [easy mistake] because he comes and sits in front of me. if i don`t stop he tries to climb up and stroke my face.

I can't use the desktop computer without Henry one of my cats sitting on the keyboard. He does it every time. He once changed the settings on a spreadsheet, and I had no idea how to change them back. He also ordered 99 onions from tesco but luckily I changed it to 2! And there is no escape when using the IPad either, then the other one Pebbles comes up and starts nuzzling it and purring.

The Beast is a shocker for coming and sitting in front of the PC.

He will just jump up and plonk himself in front of my line of vision even if it means he is half sitting on the keyboard and looks really uncomfortable.

The same thing happens if we are watching TV; our telly sits on a cabinet, and he will jump up, cling on, and give us a jedi death stare whilst blocking our view of sky news.

Lol Cats ...If Not For Sits Why Is It Made of Warm???

http://www.lolcats.com/featured/5012...e-of-warm.html

We had great fun when we projected our computer screen at the wall - we had a massive 10ft by 8ft screen and would watch movies and TV on it. Our cat would run backwards and forwards chashing the mouse pointer and jumping up and down repeatedly.

When the projector broke and we weren't able to use it, she would sit there at the wall, look up at the blank space and mew and stretch her paws out, as if to say "make it on, I want to play the game, make it work!" LOL it was the best fun free game ever! ....and great exercise too.

My cat is a bit wary of my laptop for some reason, and does not usually go near it. But I agree that if they do it's because they want your attention. They don't like the idea that their owner is staring intently at some object and giving all their attention to it, rather than them.

This is SO true! Everytime I get up from the computer, I have to put something across the keyboard otherwise she jumps up onto it and causes all kinds of mayhem. Usually she manages to sit on a key that send the picture sideways, haven't managed to right it from any of the keys, I have to go into Control Panel which is jolly awkward when the screen is sideways on.
