The Curse Of Peladon

This story is my second fave story of the Pertwee Era and definitely the best one away from Earth. Like The Daemons, it has a special atmosphere but it's a different sort of atmosphere, almost a very claustrophobic one.

I love all the different characters and aliens and The Doctor and Jo's conveniently placed status among them. It's this story I have always felt there were a couple of scenes where the relationship between the two regulars gets a little bit too cosy at times but that is counterpointed by King Peladon's fascination with Jo.

I also love the mystery behind who is helping Hepesh in his plans after he claims he is not working alone.
Spoiler

Love Alpha Centauri, though she/it/aphrodite loes look a bit rude at times!

Much better than the sequel that was to follow but I put most of this down to being a four-parter and therefore having a stronger plot to cram in.

After the Daleks (the peter cushing then the william hartnell versions), this was probably one of the first Dr Who's I ever saw. My Uncle gave me the VHS as a Christmas or birthday present. While I dont actually think it's one of the shows best stories, it's fondly remembered.

I loved the Curse of Peladon (even Jon Pertwee's completely made up nursery rhyme). It was dark, mysterious, had a monster stalking the catacombs, bit of a romance, away from Earth, Ice Warriors (not seen for a while) and of course Alpha Centauri (who I couldn't work out as a child if it was a boy or girl) which,of course, was entirely the point!!

It was fairly topical, including miner-employer disputes, plus controversy over joining a galactic community, in an adventure broadcast around the time of the miners' strike and controversy over entry to ,he EEC.

For me not just one of my favorite classic series stories but also the best of the Ice Warriors 4 appearences.

I think this was the first Pertwee story I watched as a child during a repeat run on BBC2 in the early 80s. I loved all the characters as a kid. However, having watched it on UKGold a few years back I found it boring. However, it was probably because I had to watch it in one go starting at 6am.

One of my faves, feels like a murder mystery.
I also liked the Doctor's mistrust of the Ice Warriors, and it felt strange to be really rooting for the Ice Warriors too.

Unfortunately I bought the Monster of Peladon on video way before I saw this one. Although I actually enjoyed 'Monster' initially, but it is far weaker in comparison to 'Curse'.

Have to add I am waiting patiently for the new series to do a story set on another planet with a society like that of Peladon.

That nursery rhyme was quite amusing!

I always thought poor old Aggedor never had a good time of it. Was used for evil purposes in one story, gets tamed by a singing Jon Pertwee not once but twice, his reputation gets shot to bits in the sequel by the manifestations and then just to top it off, he cops it in the final story. I suppose the poor old thing died a hero at least!

Same here, I think a third visit is well overdue and maybe they could do a story reflecting modern times again like the Euro crisis or something similar.

is there not a rule in nu who were all humans have to have originally come from earth? ie if they did a peldaon style planet now, the humans there would have to be settlers from earth, not just human looking people actually from another planet?

i can't think of a single episode in nu who that contradicts this

I think you mean hermaphrodite. I think she (or whatever) is great too, one of the most memorable characters and it shows that you don't have to have expensive special effects (just as well for old Who).

I think you're right, I knew it was something similar!

It's one of the great things about Classic Who that you can look back and chuckle at costumes like Alpha Centauri which you so wouldn't get away with today. I like watching Blake's 7 for very similar reasons. It's what makes Classic Who, Classic Who and I love it!

Alpha Centauri design influenced by the 1953 movie alien from 'It Came from Outer Space', maybe?

I suppose I should point out, before a pedant does, that it was actually a Venusian lullaby!!

Also, lets not forget Curse's link to the Troughton dynasty and of course to NuWho!

I wasn't aware that there is a particular rule, but certainly to date any people we have seen on another planet, have been human decendants of Earth. Not sure why they would restrict themselves to that. If its down to the audience being able to relate to the characters, that's silly and a little patronizing.

That's why I'm wanting a totally alien civilisation, but alas will probably be left wanting.

There is a similarity but not that much of one!

Which is exactly what JP based it on, apparently

I *almost* agree with you; Carnival of Monsters is better though

He did the same thing with the small animated gargoyle in the Daemons story.
