Cleaning FLAC Music Files!!

This morning I downloaded a FLAC torrent from Dimeadozen of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert I went to on the 20th June at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Anyway, the playback was excellent, except for maybe the third track in when suddenly there was a lot of reverbing and vibrating sound on the rest of the tracks, which is such a shame as I really wanted this bootleg in perfect condition as, obviously, I went to this concert!! The taper also recorded the first night on the 18th of June and that one is virtually professionally perfect, but this one is awful!!

I expect the taper has done a lot of editing of the recording(he actually said so in the description), but is there any other way of getting rid of the awful background vibrating sound??

Thanks!!!

no, not from a single recording. the best you can do is tweak with a program like soundforge but typically the best you can do is amend frequencies like too much/little top or bottom end or removing frequencies if you have a hum or hiss

presumably the taper had different seats and the one with reverb he was further from the speakers, towards the back of the hall or the venue was empty. the closer to the speakers, the less you encounter that problem. once it's recorded there isn't much you can do. i'm sure there would have been more than one taper at a gig like that so check the petty forums and fansites for another source. a matrix mix of two or more sources is another way of improving sound

There are ways and means of cleaning up recordings. Though doing it "properly" uses kit that costs four figure sums to buy and even then you won't get anything like perfection. They can only clean up so much before you start destroying the bits you want to keep.

It is only in TV programmes like CSI where you see them take a recording and separate out with perfect fidelity some background noise that leads them to the location of the suspect. In real life clicking a mouse button a couple of times and having the sound track magically split into two parts is next to impossible.

I've learned not to make my ransom demands near the airport.

and of course in CSI they aren't doing it for real. it's all make believe by actors

removing background noise is one thing, but removing reverb from an audience recording is another kettle of fish
