It seems to protect the fridge from freezing the top shelf of food, they took the one out of our fridge at work and now everything freezes on the top shelf and anything towards the back does too.

So IMO yes you need it.

Bit random I know, but does anybody else keep their ketchup & brown sauce in the fridge?

I always have but most people I know think it's strange.

You'd be better off starting a new thread. I keep salad cream in the fridge but not brown sauce or ketchup.

I do. I know most people don't but if you read the bottles it does say "refrigerate after opening".

Most sauces/pickles/jams state they should be kept in the fridge. I'm not sure if this is becouse they now use less vinager/sugar as preservative or that they are more worried about being sued if someone gets food poisoning
Brown sauce generally doesn't insist on going in the fridge but I always put tommy sauce in - it definitely starts tasting 'off' to me after only a few days if I dont.

Just checked and you're right. Once I knew about the tomato sauce I just assumed it would apply to brown as well.

It's just arse covering.
Preseves/pickles/sauces are going to be fine in the cupboard.
