My apologies if this has been done before, but what do you think makes th eperfect soap?

There are various debates going on about what people think makes the better soap.

I for one, think realism, punctuated with drama every now and again makes the best soap.

intersting characters who are believable and you can relate to.

what do you think?....

I pay a lot of attention to detail and so realism is important to me, as are believable characters. However realism alone is not enough and recently realism hasn't been used much were soaps are concerned. EastEnders is a prime example of a soap that doesn't care too much about realism with main characters disappearing for months (Sonia NHS, Derrick, Dennis, Kat, Peggy) to stay with 'a mate' or the convenient distant relative. EastEnders instead tries to keep its focus on drama as its trademark, but this has made the soap miserable and at times very boring. Whenever I think of EE these days, I just see a blur of cold sad characters mixed in with blue and grey colours. Not always enjoyable, no way near pefect.

Corrie & Emmerdale on the other hand are even less believable but are certainly more fun to watch. An example was the Spa Bath Scene in Corrie last week. We all knew that in real life, Les and Cilla would be rushed to Hospital with broken bones after falling through the ceiling, but who cares... we laughed! Maya's Mad Monday is also a little far fetched but that won't stop 15 million+ people tuning in to watch.

There will never be a Perfect Soap, as soaps mean different things to different people. Some viewers become obsessed with soaps and live their lives through the characters, while others simply watch purely for entertainment, comedy and fun values.

The perfect soap must therefore be the soap that we personally enjoy the most... for me this year the perfect soap has to be Emmerdale

For me Corrie - and as far as realism goes, I think it portreys real life far better than Eastenders because it has, like real life both light and shade, not doom and gloom all the time.
