Let's design the perfect best seller

So, I'm delving into the New York Times top 15 best sellers fiction list - why the NYT instead of a UK list? Because I don't know where to look for a UK list and I have had "New York Times Best Selling Author" drummed into my head since I was eight. I am open to different lists.

The list:

1 FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, by E. L. James. (Knopf Doubleday Publishing.) An inexperienced college student falls in love with a tortured man who has particular sexual tastes; the first book in a trilogy.

2 FIFTY SHADES DARKER, by E. L. James. (Knopf Doubleday Publishing.) Ana Steele learns more about Christian Grey’s troubled past; the second book in a trilogy.

3 FIFTY SHADES FREED, by E. L. James. (Knopf Doubleday Publishing.) The final book in an erotic trilogy.

4 GONE GIRL, by Gillian Flynn. (Crown Publishing.) A woman disappears on the day of her fifth anniversary; is her husband a killer?

5 BARED TO YOU, by Sylvia Day. (Penguin Group.) Two troubled people develop an intense, obsessive relationship.

6 BLOODLINE, by James Rollins. (HarperCollins Publishers.) A deadly rescue mission in the African jungle and a clinic bombing in South Carolina both reveal a dangerous conspiracy; a Sigma Force novel.

7 SUMMERLAND, by Elin Hilderbrand. (Little, Brown & Company.) The aftereffects of a deadly automobile crash in Nantucket.

8 FIFTY SHADES TRILOGY, by E. L. James. (Knopf Doubleday Publishing.) The three “Fifty Shades” novels in one bundle.

9 COMING HOME, by Karen Kingsbury. (Zondervan.) The Baxters plan a lakeside reunion, but before the big day, the unthinkable happens, leading to a revelation of secrets.

10 ONCE BURNED, by Jeaniene Frost. (HarperCollins Publishers.) When a mortal cursed with dark power is set against a vampire, passion ignites, threatening to consume them both.

11 SUMMER NIGHTS, by Susan Mallery. (Harlequin.) The horse whisperer Shane Stryker is on the lookout for a woman who wants to lead a quiet ranching life, so the librarian Annabelle Weiss must correct the wrong impression he has formed of her.

12 WICKED BUSINESS, by Janet Evanovich. (Random House Publishing.) The Salem, Mass., pastry chef Lizzy Tucker and her partner, Diesel, seach for a powerful ancient relic.

13 ODD INTERLUDE #3, by Dean Koontz. (Random House Publishing.) This story, the third in an e-book series, finds Odd Thomas at a mysterious Pacific Coast motel.

14 ABRAHAM LINCOLN - VAMPIRE HUNTER, by Seth Grahame-Smith. (Grand Central Publishing.) A journal reveals Lincoln’s fight against the undead.

15 THE MARRIAGE BARGAIN, by Jennifer Probst. (Entangled Publishing.) A billionaire who needs a wife offers a one-year marriage in name only to a bookstore owner.

The list ends.

From this list I think we can identify a few things.

1. most of these stories occur in the US

2. Fifty Shades of Grey, a series of erotic BDSM novels which began as Twilight fan fiction, dominates the list.

3. Most of the rest of the list involves vampires, the occult or relationships where the power resides in one of the partners.

From this, I think we can safely conclude that... oh what's the point? Clearly E L James' "50 Shades of Grey" is the alpha predator of fiction.

Where did it all go so wrong?

No chance, put Potter up against a real vamp and he wouldn't last a minute even this one would beat him hollow
