Just want to know where is a good place to start with regards to graphic novels that are a series rather than one offs a few recommendations would be great!

My collection is mainly comprised of superhero TPBs and graphic novels the superhero books i enjoy are Kick-Ass, Ultimate Spiderman,The Ultimates which inspired the Avengers Film, the new Batman series by Scott Snyder, Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is a very good series and Runways by Brian K. Vaughn. the non superhero books i have are The Walking Dead, Gotham Central a cop based series based in Gotham but Batman is very rarely in it and Morning Glories which could only be compared to Lost and Harry Potter.
But I'd recommend going to your local library picking different ones up seeing what you like which writers or artists and going from their. |

There's such a variety of graphic novels and comics, you really need to nail down what you're looking for. Fantasy, horror, super-hero, contemporary.... and teen-rated, mature, erotic... so many choices.

I agree with other users, what are your favourite genres?
There are so many, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, romance, comedy, action, superhero etc? |

start where ever you like. If you see something you like the look of, give the first couple of pages a look, then decide if want to buy it or not. Don't worr about continuity or references back to previous story arcs. if there's one subject that's been endlessly cataloged, it's comics.
There's some self contained stuff, like Mark Millar's Nemesis, or short series, like Scott Pilgrim. Or you could give manga a go. The stories may not be everyone's cup of tea (sometimes for good reason) but it's dead easy to get into as it's all just one continous volume. My rule of thumb is: If you like the look of something, get it a go. If the writing is good as well, stick with it |

I too am a newbie like the OP. Would 'The Definitive Avengers' be a good place to start? It's £12 in my local HMV so I thought I might give it a try.
I'd also like to start a Batman graphic novel - I've heard Year One is good but apparently it doesn't feature many villains. |

JPartridge the definitive avengers is a collection of comics throughout the avengers 45(?) year history if you want to read an avengers story i'd recommend The Ultimates its written by Mark Millar and is the main source for the movie IMHO.

I've always been writer-led - it's hard to go wrong with anything by Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Mark Millar or Warren Ellis.
Recently I've been reading Atomic Robo, Walking Dead, Wasteland, and loads from Top Shelf. |

Punisher Max is excellent and the Walking Dead Compendium is good value.
The Marvel Essential range could be a good please to start too. If I were you I’d visit your local library and borrow a load of stuff which should help you decide what you like. It worked for me
