I can't claim to be a Genesis fan but my brother let me borrow some of his albums 20 years ago (was it really that long ago!) and Trick of the Tail was one of them. Love love love that album. One of the best ever produced.

Their 70s output was excellent, but not so much the 80s onwards when the dollar signs were flashing in their eyes. A lot of Gabriel fans blamed Phil Colins for the direction Genesis took but it was a joint decision by all 3 remaining members to ditch prog rock for a more commercial sound.Trick Of The Tail, And Then There Were Three, still remain my 2 favourite Genesis albums. Ripples still has to be one of the greatest and most poignant songs ever written.

It was the departure of Steve Hackett that led to Genesis becoming more commercial. In rea\lity it should be seen as the post Hacket era rather than post Gabrial when Genesis really changed their sound.

Los Endos reminds me of a Paul McCartney trick of reprising an earlier track at the end of the album. Love it. |

Not heard that one - of the few songs I've heard from the Peter Gabriel era I can't say I'm a fan but I'll check out Selling England..

Re Ripples. Agreed. And following that heart wrenching tune what better to follow it than the upbeat title track.

I'm a fan of all the stages of the bands career. First album of theirs I bought was Selling England (and confess I didn't like it) although I wasn't the target market at the time. A friend got me into Seconds Out (still my favourite - if a bit of a cheat as it is a live album) and I re-visited Selling England and THEN loved it. Battle of Epping Forest is my have track from that album Hard pressed to say which is a favourite album overall. Probably Trick of the Tail or possibly Duke. Although favourite track of theirs overall is One For The Vine. Unlike a lot of fans I think The Lamb Lies Down is their worst - but for purely technical reasons. |

Well I wouldn't say it was as good as Trick of the Tail but it's worth another listen or two or three. The spooky thing is how similar Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins sound! |
