Im trying to iMessage my friend from my iPad to his iPhone 4S.

I get the message that he isn't registered for iMessage - what does he need to do.
He obviously uses his iPhone for texting so why can I message him?

He may be using an older version of iOS. Depending on what version he's using, you have to go through different steps to find out what iOS you're actually using (stupid, right? ). It should be something like Settings > General > About. I believe it's listed under 'version' - anything below 5.0 is not compatible with iMessage - if that is the case, get him to connect his iPhone to iTunes, and check for an update.

If he is on iOS 5.0 or above, he may need to enable iMessage. To do this, go to Settings > Messages, and turn iMessage on. This should work.

Good luck on your iMessage quest!

The OP says quite clearly he's on an iPhone 4S, which means it HAS to be iOS 5, because that's what it launched with!

Firstly, he needs to set up iMessage to add methods of contacting him. Is your iPad a 3G one (so it has a phone number), or are you using your email address to message via iMessage?

If you are, get him to add his email address as a method of contact in iMessage Settings > Messages > iMessage (set to on).

Then on your iPad, make sure you've got his email in your contacts, so it knows that's the way to make contact.

It does not need this to 'know'

Just looked at my iPad for the first time in a week or so to find some iMessages waiting for me, I'm quite confused why they didn't come through to my iPhone 4S, even though it's set up on there, any ideas?

Maybe his telephone number didn't register properly?

I had this problem on mine.

It would send imessages to some but not to others. Had to restore the phone to get the damn thing working properly. After that it was fine.
