I remember Gloria Hunnifords show being really short, like 90 minutes long and playing some really old stuff from the 40's and 50's. I quite like her though and wonder why she left Radio 2

I am sure she was on between 12 and 2, or she could of been on between 2 and 4, before David Hamilton

David Hamilton played some modern pop music in the 1980's but he famously quit because he did not like Radio 2's music policy.

Was Jimmy Young always on between 12 and 2? (eremy Vine's slot)

IIRC, the JY Prog only ended up 12-2 in the late 80s or even the early 90s.

I think at one point it was 11.30 - 1.30 and maybe 11-1.

Before then I think it used to be the mid-morning slot with a handover with Wogan - though can't recall.

Yep - Diddy David Hamilton went to Capital Gold, along with Tony Blackburn, Paul Burnett and Kenny Everett - Capital Gold 1548 was a great station in the late 80s...

The queries about the various time slots may be answered by this timeline:

http://www.r2ok.co.uk/R2_timeline.htm

At one point in the mid-80s Gloria's show was just 90 minutes, followed by a sequence of music (sessions and records) called Music All the Way. By then the only DJ playing anyting remotely current was Diddy David, who left to go to 210 in Reading at first I believe.

The JY Show started off in a lunchtime slot in 1973 but at the time he was doing the daily chat with Wogan, he was on from 10 till 12. Then he eventually ended up back at lunchtime.

There's a few curiousities here like the history of the breakfast show during Wogan's TV years. Ken's oddly timed 8.00 to 10.30 slot (btw as an April fool why doesn' t he repeat the playlist from one of those shows!).

One of radio's great what ifs:1992 - clearly no co-ordination between the networks at all. Imagine if Simon Bates had been told your time is up on R1 but we will offer you the R2 breakfast show instead of Brian Hayes - oh and you can have the Golden Hour but not Our Tune!

Missing from the list is Round Midnight with Brian Matthew that ran for the whole of the decade and gave daily coverage of the arts. With it being a late show Brian would often be able to interview actors after that evening's theatre performance. The show would do OBs from arts festivals and each summer came from the Edinburgh festival. How different it is from today's Radio 2 Arts Programme where the present incumbant seems to view everything as "brilliant".

Waggoners Walk mentioned in the OP saw little of the 80s as it ended its run in the May 1980.

I seem to remember it being 11.30 - 1.30 and I only got into radio in 1988 - I seem to think his times moved a couple of times after that?

One of things I was in to before radio was Butlins (!!) and my Grandparents recorded a show around 86/87 Angela Rippon did from the Minehead camp. Does anyone know was she a regular? I think it might have been a late night show?

we used to have radio 2 piped through the tanoy system at work.

Greeted every morning by Derek Jameson saying Mornin mornin Jameson here.

The only time good music was played was during the Children in need music marathon.

Sheila Tracy's Truckers Hour was another one I enjoyed in the early eighties. Going out at 1AM, with Truckers' toons & shout outs to the truck drivers!

From memory Angela did present a late night show for a while on Friday nights I think when they cut down the number of nights that Round Midnight was on air. Stuart Hall also had a Friday night show too.

Ken was only on the Breakfast show for 18 months.

Derek Jameson's stint lasted until 1991

Brian sounded superb in those days and it was an arts programme aimed at the masses though not sounding too arty. For me it was a big disappointment when it was dropped.

In contrast I was listening to him on Saturday morning and the voice and timing have really gone.

I always wonder if they chose Ken Bruce to replace Wogan because they sound similar.

Having read Kens autobiography it seems he was no fan of the 80's music policy either, probally why he was shifted to the late show for a while.

I'm sure he went to Radio 210 in Reading first as OI remember them doing a tv ad in the London area.
