Wordpress - Follow button not working properly

I'm using the Jetpack plugin on WordPress, but when I use the Follow Button For Jetpack, you can type in an email address, but nothing happens beyond that. No email goes to the user to ask them to confirm, and they get no notification of posts, either.

If I type the Jetpack-less alternative, then when I type in an email address, it just changes the page to http://dvdfever.co.uk/subscribe which isn't a subscription page or anything at all, so that's even more useless.

Help!

(I've enabled the former, just in case someone can figure out why it isn't working)

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with this particular plug-in or Jetpack, but I would guess the prime source for information is the plug-in's author, no?

There's a supposed support forum on the author's page, to which he doesn't respond. It's the proverbial chocolate teapot.

Hence, my posting the query on a forum which does get read.

I guess there are two possible causes of the problem: (1) the plug-in doesn't work (or doesn't work with your version of Wordpress), or (2) you didn't configure it right. I suppose you'd have fixed it already if you had such know-how, so let's focus on #2:

Did you check and re-check the plug-in's configuration page, and check if the SMTP server is configured correctly? Did you see that the SMTP server credentials are correct, and did you check that the SMTP server accepts connections from your server's location?

Many ISP's SMTP servers accept connections only from their own network; so they may not accept connections from a Wordpress site hosted by wordpress.org.

Just double-checked, but there's no config page, it's just meant to wash and go, so to speak.

I suggest looking again - seriously. Some plug-ins list their configuration pages on the plug-ins page, others under tools, others under settings, etc. There doesn't seem to be a uniform location, unfortunately.

I think it possible that the tool uses the maker's own SMTP server, but I would expect that they ask you to configure yours. Maybe you should take a look at the plug-in source (from the plug-ins page). If the plug-in requires source-level configuration (rather than supporting a config page), it would be in the first 10..50 lines of code. (This would also indicate a poor plug-in, and I wouldn't recommend using it for that reason alone.)

I've had another good look through. Can't find any SMTP references or anything else pertinent amongst the plugin code. I don't know if I'm being thick here...:
