Saves them money doesn't it.

We really do need Digital 2 sooner rather than later though. Complete change to five years ago when Digital 1 was empty and there was still the prospect of 4 digital launching!
What's the deal with that? Is Channel Four still sitting on the licence?

No, the 4 Digital Group returned the licence to Ofcom, but it hasn't been readvertised.

I take it you know very little about John Myers then?
I also think its an awful name, conjuring up thoughts of teenagers being Team Bieber etc although probably fitting for the audience it will attract if it is playing mainly modern rock.

Probably used as they could not buy the Rock radio brand? However Metal Hammer radio is also now a possibility?

So if it's "fitting for the audience" it clearly isn't an awful name. Look, coming up with something that's not already licenced these days is no easy task. What would you have called it?

We are dragging the bottom now if we are discussing names. Mapperly is right, getting a sign off on a name that works across every platform is practically impossible. Which is why names for things are often made up of words that are not really names at all. Metal Hammer will no doubt be the name of a show but not the station.

I remember the outcry when the BBC came up with boring names like Radio 1 and Radio 2 etc. Now look at them.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one but the only think that matters will be what they put out on the air.

Precisely - its just MY opinion - like the opinions of those who hated the names Real XS and Free Radio (which were also heavily expressed on this board)

That is why i said it suits the modern rock audience they seem to be trying to attract (of which I am not one).

Most possibilities have been ruled out
Rock radio- ruled out
Rock fm- exists
Rock sound- there is a magazine called that

The list could easily go on

Team rock and planet rock very simular to me. Im not a lover of rock music but if its like a kerrang style with classic stuff too I might give it a listen esp if they play green day,Linkin park and limp bizcuit etc.

Think there's a misunderstand going on here, all I'm saying is Teamrock radio is a far better name for a Rock radio (classic or otherwise) station than Real Xs will ever be in a million years, when the re-brand was mooted I ask a work colleague what kind of music do you think a station called real xs would play, his answer was dance music.

But most radio station names don't mean a thing when they are new.
If Kiss was just starting up now what type of music would you guess they played? I'd have said love songs myself...

They also now have the Metal hammer and Classic rock fan magazines which can be used to to promote the new station, (although with NME and Q promotion between the magazines and radio did not work).
If they can buy Real XS to inherit the Rock radio listeners might give a boost, but looks like they are prepared to fund the new station long term to slowly build up an audience.

Does anybody know when this station is launching or when the test transmissions will start. Looking forward to the new station I just hope they do indeed play the whole spectrum of rock music as promised.

On the 12th they said
http://radiotoday.co.uk/2013/04/team...nagement-team/
TeamRock Radio which starts testing on national DAB within the next 10 days.
There might be a webstream by the 22nd?
But more likely beginning of May when Ab's 80 and Planetrock reduce bw on DAB.
http://onegoldensquare.com/2013/04/c...-absolute-80s/

It could be by launch the name may change as this has happened with other stations? If I was them I would go for "Metal Hammer" as it has 433,880 likes on it's facebook page and a good way to build up an audience?.

It depends where you are coming from. For me "XS" immediately brings to mind the indie/new rock/new music show that Jeff Cooper used to do on Hallam FM and others.

But most radio station names don't mean a thing when they are new.

Kiss is a good example of you make the name - in America there is also a country station in Miami which uses the name in addition to Clear Channel's CHR and Urban stations elsewhere.

Personally I think Team Rock is a good name. Remember this will be a part of a multi-media company/portal so something like "Rock Radio" would not have fitted.

I would imagine the rock magazine brands will make it on-air as programmes and features. Indeed Metal Hammer was heard on Planet Rock and Rock Radio in the past.

No it isn't.

With Free Radio you were talking about rebranding four radio stations with a massive heritage in their markets. This is quite different.

Presumably it's meant to be Team Rock with the emphasis on the second word. The trouble is, there are genres of rock, hard rock, soft rock, punk rock, country rock, jazz rock, etc, where you emphasise the first word. So it's more intuitive to to say Team Rock than Team Rock.

the name of TeamRock's station will depend entirely on what they intend to play...

They won't call it Metal Hammer Radio if they're only going to play classic rock.... They won't call it Classic Rock Radio if they're going to play heavy metal and new rock...

I'd guess that they'll call it Team Rock Radio...

Or it might just be called Team Rock. Why add the word Radio?

No, it's quite similar, Rock radio was a name loved by the listeners and the branding was fantastic, there were problems in Manchester particularly due to the closeness of (non)Rock FM in Preston that led to licensing problems but nothing that could have been overcome with a bit of imagination, instead GMG tried to hide the station behind a 'Hot AC' brand which the majority of listeners hated, and they saw the whole station as broke and tried to fix the bit that weren't, particularly restricting the playlist to a limited no of songs which were played in constant rotation pissing all the regular listeners off.
