Liver illness

Hi All

I'm writing today to see if anyone else has had experience of liver illness in a young dog.

Our springer 19mths collapsed last wednesday and was rushed to the small animal hospital where she remained in ICU for several days. After tests it seemed that she had suffered an acute insult to the liver either casued by a toxin (ingested) or a viral attack. We have racked our brain as to anything we think she may have been in contact with but the vet has advised we may never know what caused this.

She is now hopefully on the mend with her Liver Enzyme results now heading in the right direction (should be max 110 - 7000 at highest now 2500) and her clotting improving.
We thankfully have her home with us today to assist with her rehabilitation and she seems well in herself if not a little more tired than usual (which for a springer is unheard of).

We have more tests (blood and biopsy) to undergo before they can advise the long term prognosis, we remain hopeful that there is no lasting damage.

I just wondered if anyone had ever experienced anything like this, specifically liver illnesses. Any ideas what long term prognosis we can expect?

Thanks

sounds like a toxin of some kind, she doesn't have access to medicines or the like? Household chemicals can be very toxic phenol based disinfectacts like Dettol. Paracetamol is extremely toxic to small animals and even aspirin can be dangerous. Even things like chocolate are toxic although she'd have to eat a fair bit of it.

Thanks Blackjack

We've considered all these, she has no access to any household chemicals or drugs.
Believe me, if its at all possible its toxic we have considered if she could have been in contact with it. We have a new fence and she likes to chew on the grass near it so we have checked there are no chemicals on the fence!
She's not a 'scavenger' at all and doesn't tend to pick up bits so we really are stumped.
I think now we are trying to look forward as to what her future prognosis will be.
