putting a DVD on VHS
Hi People
I have bought a DVD (Rugrats In Paris) but we have a dvd only in my room which has a 14'' tv so its not much fun watching it but in my brothers room we have a 32''tv but no dvd player. i did buy the dvd so it is legal but i want to copy it on a vhs so i can watch it on my brothers tv. if i dubbed a dvd on to a vhs would it be bad quality because i have heard that they are properly protected LIKE. Also Please do not tell me to take the dvd into my brothers room because it is all wired up and really hard to take it out of a wall cabinet thing. PLEASE HELP

hola, the DVD is probably protected with something called macrovision which basically changes the brightness of the picture every second or so when copied, making it unwatchable.
you can get things to prevent the macrovision signal being sent to the VCR from places like maplins (i think) or if you can play it through your PC then TVTool allows for macrovision to be turned off and then you just record through your VCR as normal. thats a some basic start stuff anyway

Some DVD players can have macrovision disabled in the same way as you can disable the region lock. I believe Tesco are selling the Dansai 852 for £100 and the macrovision can be turned off using the codes on the remote.
Some cheappy VCRs don't have macrovision so they can record from DVDs or VHS. Have a look at DVD Reviewer and their forums for more info on hacks. |

Can't you just move the DVD player into your brother's room when you (and him) wanna watch a DVD? Believe me you'll love watching DVDs a 32" Widescreen.

Why not just run a permanent composite/2 phono cable or a long scart from the dvd player to your brothers tv.....then you'd never have to worry about moving the player or making vhs copies

The DVD might not even have macrovision, not all DVDs do (Perfect Storm) - though I'd have to admit most do.

You would be best getting another DVD player, you can get one for £100 or less. Even if you did get a good copy onto VHS it would still look poor compared to the DVD. The difference would be noticeable on a 32" TV.
