If it is the Toshiba SD210 with an 'e' on the end then it has a region hack available. Couldn't see the model without the 'e' though.

Look here

'fraid that's not quite right... the "e" is always on the end of the model number, some places just skip it when quoting the model number.

It'll only be multi-region if it specifically says multi-region, as it requires a third party to do a hardware mod to the player (possibly a simple firmware alteration, possibly opening up the player and replacing one of the surface mount chips).

£170 is indeed a good price for it though, especially multi-region modded.

Richer Sounds often offer region 2 of multi region versions of the same type. so you can choose .... multi region cost about £40 more in general. They offer the Toshiba at about £180 and I'm sure it said it was multiregion at that price. (Sorry if I'm mistaken)

I'd also consider a Thomson / Samsung DVD as they are easily remote control hacked. So no mods or hardware tweaks needed.

*now confused*

http://www.richersounds.com/cgi-bin/...productID=5258

Richersounds says it has no 5.1 output, no support for mp3s or cd/cdrw compatibility, whereas in reviews and on other sites it does...

Any ideas?

RCE are Region Coding Enhanced discs (correct if wrong!) and i think basically that its a disc that doesnt play on players that are all region unless some hack/mod is implemented.

this is how it was explained to me anyway!

Dolby Digital compatible
MPEG2 5.1 Surround compatible
Digital Theatre System (DTS) compatible

taken from the toshiba.co.uk site and I have also read that it does have CD/CDRW

Have a look here:

http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/5...vd-player.html

It's more expensive than Richer Sounds as you still need to add the VAT to the prices shown. I haven't used Techtronics myself, but when I upgrade my 3 year old Samsung 807, it will almost certainly be from them.

oops.

didn't realise you'd started another thread elsewhere about this. Still - two recommendations for the same company - must be good.

thanks though flump, thought it best to start a new thread as the new question was different to the original

I tell you one thing though, go to the newsgroup search on google and techtronics come up with the worst posts I have ever seen, so many people seem to have had problems with them? not all though, so im gonna have to look into them a bit more

I've never dealt with techtronics myself, but I've heard some awful things and some very good things about them. It seems to me to be one of those companies that if everything goes right with your order they are fantabalisicious, but if anything goes wrong you'll have a **** of a time putting it right.

Upgrade Heaven offer similar deals (www.upgradeheaven.co.uk), and have, in my experience, less detractors. As always though, YMMV.

Interesting. I hadn't neard anything bad about them, but then again I hadn't gone looking for bad reports!!! I think I'll have to investigate a bit further before deciding what to buy, and from who.

I was always under the impression that Techtronics were pretty good, especially since one of the DVD mags used to feature a two page article by them every month (think it was Total DVD?). I also like the the way their website lists the specs of machines. I know their website has shown apologies for delays either for orders or returns - maybe they've become a victim of their own success and are having problems keeping up with demand. I'm fairly certain that a mate got his player chipped by them about two years ago, but that was when DVD was fairly new and there weren't that many people doing multi-region mods back then. He seemed to think they were ok then.

However, I have to agree that customer service is the key. If I have to pay an extra £20 to get a machine from a company that provides good customer service, then I will.

I've always bought my hi-fi kit from Richer Sounds - I won't go anywhere else for separates. They know what they're talking about, the kit is good quality, and customer service is really good. The trouble is that they're usually out of stock on the bits I'm after as their deals are so good.
