Hills r/d prescription diet

Hi

My cat Shelly needs to lose weight and the nurse prescriped Hills r/d wet food. Have you any experience in this?

The food looks really unappealing, disgusting and very musy. My Shelly wont touch it and it's been a day and half now and she hates it. She isn't a fussy girl at all and would eat anything so i was suprised she turned away at this. I wont give it to her if she wont eat it.

What do you think about the Hills prescription food? Does it help?

Well I can only speak from experience and my dog gets Hills D/D as part of his diet he has also been on the I/D before. I find it good and my dog enjoys it although wouldn't eat the wet variety. However a vast majority of vets will often try and push you onto Hills (you may find their reception is stacked high with the stuff!) Its how I first started using it to begin with as well! Went in for one thing came back out with a bag full off this food! It isn't the best food on the market in terms of meat content. If the only issue with your cat is being overweight then look into other low fat foods with a high meat content and lower their food intake to the minimum amount they should be having daily, no treats etc on the side. What has been your cats diet to get so overweight??

My cat is on the r/d dry food. He's on that because he has no thyroid and keeping his weight steady is a bit of a battle. He loves it.

Just thought as well you may be doing this but if not any change in food should be slowly so if you have been giving all this food since a few days ago it may upset your cats tummy so may be why she is refusing it, the changeover needs to be gradual so just a small meal of it daily.

My boy refused to eat it too when he needed to lose weight and I was reluctant to put him on an all dry diet.

I found this site http://www.scheyderweb.com/cats/catfood.html and entered the details of normal supermarket foods.

I found out that Encore and Purina One Natural Balance wet food came out lower in calories than the prescribed diet food.

After discussing with my vet he was happy for me to feed these rather than the diet food. Works out much cheaper too!

We took in a lost/feral cat and he turned out to have urinary problems. The vet put him on a special dietary food that cost a bomb, but now I get it here
usually getting a discount because I buy two lots of the same at once, so I get free delivery.

I have no connection with the company, just looking to shop as cannily as I can.

It's awfully expensive, but I figure it's cheaper to keep him healthy.

Sometimes though we get him This from the local pet store, which is very good value, much cheaper than the vet diet and a complete food which he likes.

On their site they say introduce new food in a quarter-three quarters capacity.

Both of our 16 year old cats have reduced renal function, the male more than female, and had lost much weight in the past year. They were both put on the k/d Hills prescription diet, she will only eat the dried variety, he only the wet one in sachets. Wouldnt touch it for a couple of days but now eats nothing else. Since he discovered it, he eats about 2 sachets a day, which is quite expensive. However I have substituted it on occasions with the Royal Canin renal one which is much cheaper and offers different flavours. According to the vet, there is no difference in make up of the different brands.I also get it mainly from an internet pet food supplier so is cheaper than the vet, so shop around and dont feel you have to buy the same (most expensive) brand.

Josephine....My cat Shelly developed weak back legs and so she finds it hard to exercise. So the weight kinda piled on. She isn't massively over-weight...just that she has a little tummy just dangling.

We tried mixing it in and she just wont eat it. We've tried now since Monday and she wont touch it. Her last proper meal before the r/d came in was Monday morning. I've left it over night and tried several times a day to entice her to eat it....nothing. Tonight now we're going back onto our food. What would you reccomend thats low in fat/carbs and high in meat? Atm we've got Applaws, Hi-Life and Seriously good.

We're just gonna reduce the amout we give her til her weight slowly drops. My vet nurse detered from using Hills since April but decide to try it to see if it helps. It's only been the last couple of months we've tried hardcore to get the weight down. But it's very hard with her legs as she can;t really run or jump much anymore.
