As they are near enough the same price in the UK (£159 for 8GB Nexus 7 or £169 for 16GB Playbook) and I have a budget of £170, which one should I get?

Nexus 7 - no competition - Blackberry is struggling, there are no where near as many apps and if Blackberry goes under then so does the app store...Google on the other hand are fully supporting Android and you will get all the latest updates.

This ^^^

Nexus 7 has a better spec, better supported OS, more apps, and is by a company that isn't likely to go bankrupt soon...

Yep RIM not doing too well at the moment. Stock price low, employee numbers slashed, and now they're flogging a company jet. http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/10/ca...b-reports-say/

I tell you when mine comes, as have both, however I think the nexus will probably win, as I will be able to stream from nas drive to it. As I can not do with current playbook apps only transfer files.

Though the playbook for surfing, docs to go, iplayer, email is a great little machine, I really like the browser on it. Its a really high build quality as well,

For one, Dixons no longer has any stores and two no shop has the 8GB version he wants, only Google themselves.

no shops have any of any size right now. Dixons/currys digital is still all the same. Why the attitude?

Regardless of questions of attitude etc the main point is that it looks like the only place to get the 8GB version is from Google - unless someone has an alternative link?

You wont find the 8GB anywhere but the Google Play store because they're sold at cost. The 16GB ones aren't sold at cost so retail stores can make a bit of profit on them even selling them at the same RRP as Google.

Im a bit of a old fart ,when trying new places to buy from,i must admit! The tablet is for my dauthers birthday and the 8gb price is about as much as im willing to pay out for her bday

Does the google store accept pay-pal by any chance? and also has any one on here had any experience buying large items off the google store. Sorry for all the questions and for hijacking the thread.

I think its healthy to ask these questions when faced with an unknown store. To answer your question, other than a few Galaxy Nexus phones sold, this is probably the first hardware google have sold through the Play Store, the rest have been apps/games/books/movies of around £1-£5 each.

I suspect they won't take paypal, preferring instead their equivalent, google checkout, which when set up, will also remove the need to enter credit card details.

But....it's Google. I can confirm that play.google.com is 100% genuine and won't run off with your credit card details to a random 3rd world country. The only real risk I would say is delivery times, particularly if you're getting it for a birthday. As the product hasn't been released yet, delivery times aren't confirmed...

Yes, 'Goggle Checkout' is similar to Paypal. I prefer Paypal but I've used Checkout quite a few times when Paypal hasn't been an option with no problems.

Well, so far, Google haven't run off with anyone's money.

Which is more than you can say for PayPal.
