New Frank Ocean - Channel Orange

I'm suprised there hasn't been a thread already on this! But anyway finally got finished listening to the entire album that came out today!

I really like it, I knew I would but I was afraid it wouldn't match up to the excellence of Nostalgia,Ultra! It's do refreshing to see a black male artist be so fearless on both his music and personal life and I really respect him as an artist

Back to the album haha Thinking Bout You still sounds as good as it did a year ago, other stand outs are Sweet Life, pyramids, Bad Religion, Super, Rich Kids, Forrest Gump and Monks!

Anyone else listened yet? Thoughts?

MrJames, it's streaming on Frank's tumblr page and is available to buy on iTunes.

I'm liking it so far but at the moment it hasn't hit me in the way Nostalgia, Ultra has but then again I think it needs time to settle with me. I think he's one of those artists that you need to listen to a few times to truly appreciate.

Pyramids stands out by a mile as the best track for me at the moment but that's likely to change. Looking forward to listening more to it.

Cannot wait to own it physically and hear it all...so much respect for him!

ANd love his style of music...kinda reminds me of a fusion of Marvin gaye and Prince brought into current popular music...its mesmerising...Pyramids is definitely one of my "Songs Of The Year"

Cannot wait!

It's an absolutely incredible album. If this doesn't sweep the floor at the Grammy's I don't know what will. It's a masterpiece. I have listened to it through from start to finish 3 times today.
Highlights for me are Thinking Bout You, Bad Religion and Super Rich Kids.
As a body of work though it flows amazingly.

Hazzajam, I was actually thinking of the album's chances at the Grammys earlier. I'm not sure if it'll translate into Grammy votes and if it doesn't it'll be a shame. Look at what happened with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I'm hoping I'm wrong though.

This is something new for me, i don't think an artist/album has ever caught my attention as much as Frank Ocean - Channel Orange. I'm really blown away by this man's talent.

Stand out songs for me are, Thinkin Bout You, Sweet Life, Super, Rich Kids, Monks, Bad Religion and Pink Matter.

I felt exactly the same way when I heard Nostalgia, Ultra. I don't think R'n'B has been this interesting since the days of D'Angelo, Lauren Hill and Erykah Badu.

I really liked his mixtape, then I saw his performance of 'Bad Religion' on Jimmy Fallon ( http://losangelesleakers.com/2012/07...-fallon-video/ ) and it was beyond amazing! I can't wait to listen to the whole album later.

This is highly overrated rubbish. No wonder he pulled the publicity stunt and rush-released it.

Ah he really brings so much gusto to that performance...the energy there....wow! its that mid-70s Quiet Storm sound i loved with Marvin gaye...he has brought it out just amazing and he along with Janelle Monae IMO are the eladers of the Hip Hop trend right now.

Cannot wait to own the album next week.

I was worried it wouldn't live up to Nostalgia Ultra but he really delivered. I love this guy. Pyramids is definitely one of my songs of the year.

Un-warranted excitement

And I dont dislike him. The album is rubbish. It's also very convenient for it to be rush-released to itunes in the middle of this sudden publicity over his sexuality. People are totally buying the hype.

what is it with you always digging at me???

And also its not "people buying the hype"....its the fact that he is truly a great artist...been into him since i heard Church in The Wild tbh the past year.

Just glad he finally has an album out and cannot wait to hear it.

Always

And I've listened to the stream thanks, and it's nothing to write home about. Pyrite is better than anything on there.

Anyone who claims this sort of thing obviously doesn't know Frank Ocean very well. Since when was Frank ever the kind of artist to do publicity stunts or even care that much about sales?

If he cared about sales, he wouldn't have released Nostalgia, Ultra as a free mixtape - he had a record deal. Had he waited a little while and complied with a few of Def Jam's conditions it would have been released as an actual album. With a fair few sales.

And if he cared about sales of Channel Orange he wouldn't have it streaming entirely free on his website. And publicised that on his twitter - instead of saying 'my album's on iTunes now guys, buy it', he told his 1 million followers to listen free on his website. That'll damage sales, and undo any benefits gained by moving the release date forwards.

I disagree. I LOVED Nostaligia, Ultra and all the songs on Lonny Breaux Collection, and generally all his love songs (Pyrite included), but what I love about Channel Orange is that it's not just love songs. He tackles a variety of issues and expresses lots of opinions. It's thought-provoking and both beautifully written and delivered.

The album is a disappointment, and yet this is the one he'll be making money from, and the one that is rush-released around the time of this publicity. Also you hardly know Frank yourselves
