How to increase my internet speed?
I was wondering if anyone knew a way I could increase my download and upload speeds and generally my internet speed.
My phone company BT told me that I was with in a good range but said it I wanted to increase it I can buy a internet accelerator from a local PC shop. Does anyone know of one or can recommend one? Or does anyone know of a free program online that I can get a free internet accelerator? a good one? Cheers in advance. |

What are your current speeds? or what are you meant to be on according to BT. What router are you using?
I don't think you can boost your speed by installing a software package, etc. |

do you have a laptop or desktop? If desktop, try connecting it directly to the router for a better connection. I would recommend the same for the laptop, IF you can that is.
As far as I know, you can't get some package that speeds up your internet connection. for example, if you can only get 10MB, thats what you will get, the software won't enable you to get 12MB, as physically (or how BT set it) your speed is 10MB I use the two following programs every month or so, to clean up my PC, one is Advanced Windows Care, the free edition and CCleaner, the free edition. Try clearing your browsers history, etc. I have loads of problems with skype, more on my laptop, the connection drops alot, etc. Its more stable when I connect the desktop/laptop directly to the router. |

Thanks, I have a PC.
Skype is a nightmare, can barely get 5 mins without the picture distorting or the sound distorting. However, I use CCleaner and run it. I dont have Advanced Windows Care though so could give that a try though. |

I have similar problem with skype. Although a friend has recently got virgin broadband installed and she claims its super fast and skype is very stable, sometimes the picture is almost has no lag.
Good luck and if things improve, let us know. |

I can only recommend not to spend money on any "speed boosting" software. There is not a single one out there that is not a scam. Clever caching things might improve your browsing speed a little, but so does a clever browser (get Chrome). Skype & Co will not benefit from any of these.
Do what posters above have said: check your wiring. Unclutter your PC. Switch from WiFi to wired connection. Check your router's throughput (must cheap ones can be a real bottleneck, maybe even in the 5 Mbps region), possibly try a different router. Consider spending your money on a higher rate subscription, but no, don't buy software, and don't clutter your machine with free boosting software either. |

If your speeds are what BT is expecting then there is not much you can do to improve the actual speed…does Skype have options to use slightly lower video quality? |

Some caching programs (like what some versions of Opera do) were helpful in the dial-up days but no longer.
In terms of equipment etc, focus on improving the connection to your router. Go wired with ethernet if you can. The biggest change to your broadband would be to switch to Virgin if you can. |

can you borrow a laptop from a friend or neighbour and get them to plug it into your broadband connection and check the speed.
It may well be the problem is with your PC and not internet connection. 5mb is plenty enough to run skype. 0.8 upload is tight but the main problem will be the person at the other end will get a choppy picture. Also what sort of connection is the person at the other end on, it could well be a problem at their end. |

Well now you have a lot of choice but your distance from the exchange matters. Your Fiance is on some sort of fibre network which you could see is that available to you.

Well I looked at skype and to get high quality video calling I need
500kbps / 500kbps I get 1.01 mbps and my fiancée gets 35 mbps. So strange as we begin talking at 8.30pm and every night on the dot at 9.30pm her picture and sound becomes and stays distorted. But she can see me and hear me fine after that time. Anyone know what it could be. |

If Skype require 500 kbps and you have 1.01 Mbps (1010 kbps) then your speed is double the specified requirement.
But having said that, it is very slow. |
