Which soap will be axed next?
Out of all the soap which soap do you think will be axed next out of; Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Doctors?
I only watch Hollyoaks regularly, and have dipped in and out of Eastenders since the Kirckwood era and watch Corrie now and again. So if one of these 3 were axed I wouldn't be happy! I think we can say the soaps will be around for a few years yet but which soap will get the axe first and when do you think this will happen? |

Short of writing "I think the Mc***ns done it" saying "I think xyz soap should be axed" is the quickest way of getting a thread chopped here. The posts that follow are unconstructive.

Based on ratings: Hollyoaks. They do have a good storyline once every blue moon, but apart from that, it is just boring just focusing on the sixth form and the freshers. I really don't think they should have revisited the Silas plot.

voted Doctors - the only one I watch is EE so I obviously I dont know the quality of the others or the popularity but common sense dictates that Doctors is in the weakest positon, time slot, content etc
I suppose HO could be vulnerable in that its on a commercial channel so if people dont watch it will be cancelled but it's hard to imagine another Brookside... |

Hollyoaks I think has the fewest viewers and is probably at more of a risk than the others. Doctors has the advantage that it is on at lunch-time so attracts people who are at home during the day and it must be doing something right if the BBC are happy to keep broadcasting it and putting it up against the lunch-time Home and Away/Neighbours slot. It also appeals to a wider range of people whereas Hollyoaks tends to be aimed at the teen market (it always has been) but it still used to cater for older people (the Tony, Jambo, Mr C etc storylines/characters for example) but now a days there is a lot of focus I feel on the teens/younger people and the McQueens. The BBC have to justify spending money on their programmes so if Doctors wasn't attracting enough viewers I am sure they wouldn't think twice about axing it.
I doubt any of them would get axed though. |

I don't think any of the current soaps will be axed for quite some time, I actually think Hollyoaks is relatively safe, C4 have no other soaps and it still rates pretty well plus they've got a lot of advertising and Product Placement revenue from it so they won't be axing it anytime soon.

Hollyoaks gets good ratings once you have counted c4, e4, the omnibuses online etc and appeals to an attractive target audience for advertisers plus it is one of the few home grown dramas on channel 4 so it isnt going anywere. People have been predicting it will be axed since the first episode!
None of the soaps mentioned will be axed imo, the one most likely is surely neighbours as it gets hardly any viewers in australia and is only on screen due to the backing from the uk |

People say hollyoaks as it has the lowest ratings but I feel with Hollyoaks and the age range it is targeted at, you can't really count ratings. 1. its on two different channels so you have to put them together and then add on the viewers for omnibus, plus younger people are more likely to record it and watch it later or even then watch it on 4od as it catch up using the internet is common for youngsters so if you put all those together, it probably gets a heck of a lot of ratings.

Yeah 18-25% which is more than most prime time shows. The BBC has involved Doctors in its 10 yeae plan and have confirmed its staying put in Birmingham. Hollyoaks possibly but the others no chance

With all Hollyoaks multiple viewings added together it still doesn't even begin to touch the other soaps 1 viewing. I bet even now a 20 year old repeat of Friends would beat Hollyoaks. |

Yeah, Doctors isn't going anywhere, if anything the next step is to add a 2nd showing either later on the main channels or bbc3.

I dont think any of them are likely to be axed any time soon (in fact I think one of the Aussie soaps is more likely to go sooner than any of the Brit ones or possibly a regional soap like River City) but out of the choices I went for Hollyoaks. The prime reason for this is it is a soap that is mainly aimed towards teens which means HO has to constantly renew its audience whereas the others can rely on more 'long term' fans. That said, I dont think Channel 4 will axe HO unless they have another soap to replace it, as they will want to have at least one Flagship soap on their schedules.
