Return it to wherever you got it from and replace it with one that can still read DVDs as well as CDs.

Most likely it's the laser assembly that's failed, it would most probably need a complete new DVD mech to repair it (as that's most likely all that's available).

As Nigel says probably a laser fault in the DVD drive. One thing that you could try is running a disk cleaner through the drive. If you are very lucky it is just some gunge on the laser and that might sort it. However be prepared for disappointment.

Lasers don't last for ever and if it has been well used it could very easily be on it's last legs. So even if a cleaning disk does revive it it might not be a long term solution.

my neighbour who is elderly has had this DVD player for about 8 years.. However in all that time, he has never used it. he just watched TV, and went to bed and watched a portable DVD player..he has now thrown away a CRT TV on a cabinet stand, along with the DVD recorder he gave me... TV still works. shame..

Found this info on videohelp forums:

"A dvd player decides what media is inserted by the use of 2 diodes, which control the frequency of the laser

This is how it determines the difference between cd and dvd media"

"Just to add, the CD and DVD lasers are separate devices under a common lens. It's not unusual for the DVD laser to die first."

As already mentioned by mac2708, they use two lasers (a BD player uses three).

Dust is more serious than it sounds as well, you can clean the outside of the final lens, but you can't clean the inside of it, or the internal optics.

[pedant mode] There is no z in laser, it is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation [/pedant mode]

Changing the laser is probably physically possible, always assuming the relevant spare part is available, but might cost more to fit than the unit is worth. Especially if you have to pay someone to do the necessary.

took the drive out of the case, and cleaned the lens manually. put it all back, not expecting anything, hey presto it is working fine.. bought a ten pound lens cleaner and it was crap..
