Well no one had the opportunity to vote for her a fourth time so we don't know how popular she would have been amongst the voting public do we? Very many people still admire all that Margaret Thatcher did.

I think one of the reasons he provokes such a vehement reaction in people is that many of us blame ourselves for allowing him to con us. I admit I fell for it for two elections and now feel totally betrayed. Leaving aside the obvious like the rather nasty tendency to go to war, he could, with his huge majority, have done so much but he didn't bother because he hadn't got the guts to take on Brown. In reality it is always much easier for a Labour government to reform welfare and he could have pushed through a really radical programme but he funked it. I can never forgive him and don't want him anywhere near our government.

DS members, today is not a day for soundbites, really. But I feel the hand of history upon our shoulders. I really do. This will be a historic day in Labour - the day they shot themselves in the foot when they should be miles ahead.

An economy based of mega high borrowing and a giant public sector was always going to fail.
A growing economy I might add with the deficit failling from its 2009 peak of 11.5% to 10.2% as of 2010 on the back of that economic growth

I shudder to think how much higher unemployment would have been had the right-wingers been (not centred about the Conservative Party) in government as of 2008 given their track record during the 'Monetarist Recession' and that of the early 1990s

OK for a Conservative government to be running as deficit of 9% of GDP, as of 1993, and 10.7% unemployment was it?

What's this giant public sector? Public spending as % of GDP was, generally, lower under Labour; indeed, our public debt as % of GDP was, as of 2007, lower than when John Major you know

Public debt is nothing new to the UK and certainly novel to Labour governments

Look, I'm a pretty straight sort of guy so I have to ask the question 'Is this a joke?'

I am almost finding it easier to believe he's been selected for the 100 Metres Relay

Damn shame that Labour didn't win the last election to clear up the mess that they left.

He could never be more stupid than I think he is but as for Blair, it may give you palpitations to know that in a very recent poll on this board, Blair came second to Thatcher in popularity since the queen ascended to the throne.

He's one of the most successful British politicians ever. Yet people ask what he could possibly add?

I love this 'I don't like him therefore he's worthless' attitude.

LIes to go to war.

Based an economy on high public borrowing and big public sector. This has led to tears of today. He may of won three elections, but with hindsight, I think a lot of people regret voting for him.

Maybe he will be a back seat driver, in the same way Thatcher wanted to be with Major.

Isn't it about time the private sector stopped FAILING to procure the jobs we need?

Personally, I favour rewarding those who 1) create jobs and 2) pay higher wages through tax cuts. There'd be none of this something (tax cuts) for nothing (no jobs)

There must be something in the water. Berlusconi has just announced he may run for Prime Minister next year.
