Does a game being to popular start to make it unpopular

I've noticed that over time if a game is to well liked or praised to much, out of nowhere the games start to gather haters that weren't around when the game was released but rather they randomly realise they hate the game over time

I'd give examples as FFVII and Uncharted

Uncharted has not got less popular, just that 3 is not a big jump over 2, so the 2 wow factor is missing.

UC3 is slightly better than UC2, but UC2 is the most wow game I have ever played

It happens with alot of things, not just gaming. Facebook, Justin Beiber, Microsoft ,Apple and Man utd for example, all have their fair share of haters.

In gaming, Call of Duty gets more stick than most. It's not that it's a bad game, more that people have become tired of the game not changing enough and developers often get accused of 'milking the franchise'. In reality, Call of Duty sells by the shed load and still gets played by massive numbers, no amount of haters will ever change that. The funny thing is, is that if IW/Treyarch did change the game it would have another group of haters claiming that it isn't Call of duty anymore.

From what I've seen in COD discussions, the haters are the ones that play it

They don't need to change it drastically. Treyarch have done the right thing by shaking it up a bit for Black Ops 2.

Familiarity breeds contempt. In the case of gaming, people are always going to judge games harshly based on past experiences. To use the Uncharted 3 example again; it is a very good game, but because it was preceded by Uncharted 2 - arguably one of the finest games this generation has produced - it was going to be held to extremely high expectations.
