Disconnecting Kindle Wi-fi

Has the Kindle menu design changed in the last day or so? To switch Wi-fi on or off, you previously pressed the menu button at the home page and the option to turn off or on was the top menu item. Now you have to go to settings and select "Aeroplane Mode". This must have changed in the last day or so because I downloaded an e-book a couple of days ago and used the old method to turn wi-fi on. I would imagine that many users are going around with wi-fi on permanently and thus using excessive battery power if they were not aware of this.

No menu change here (kindle keyboard). I find the battery life is brilliant even with WiFi on, so I might as well take advantage of synchronization between multiple readers (Kindle, Android Kindle app on the phone, etc).

I use the bog standard Kindle (without keyboard) and don't really need to synchronise with anything. However, I do remember the original set-up instructions stating that leaving wi-fi on does reduce battery life by up to half between charges, so I suppose this could be important to anyone who uses their equipment a lot on the move. Best thing I ever bought though!!

There was an update for new kindles, touch and no touch. Keyboard ones had no update in a long time now. I guess your kindle updated itself when you let it sleep with wifi on. You can check the version of firmware you have. The latest is 4.1 for non touch, 5.1 for touch.

Thanks Ivan. you're right. Version is 4.1, and come to think of it, when I woke it up this morning, there was a slight delay then it re-booted itself, so it must have been downloading the new version then.

The latest update (for the £89 Kindle and - I think - the Touch, but not the Kindle with a keyboard) renames wifi "aeroplane mode". if you have a small picture of an aeroplane at the top of the screen when you press Menu the wi-fi is disabled. Lots of queries / complaints about it on the Kindle forum over on Amazon.

i got the keyboard (and making this post with it).

note that wi fi uses much less power than 3G. as the receiving antenna is much closer !
