I've still got the old silver BTVision box, I've had it since launch which is quite a few years I can tell you !!. At the start the software was very dodgy, even watching live TV had its problems. After some very overdue software upgrades the box now runs as sweet as a nut.

My question is, with the new Freeview HD Youview box on the horizon (which I will be getting day one), why bother upsetting the applecart with a new OS & UI ??. The old boxes are running fine so why introduce a new apparently slow, buggy OS / UI to a platform that is on its way out ?. What is BT trying to achieve here apart from forcing an upgrade on people that doesn't provide any extra features (in fact you lose red button & text at the moment) and wipes all of your recordings ?.

If I'm something here then please by all means enlighten me.

wwwebber, as far as I understand, BT are moving the existing boxes from Widows to Linux. The new Youview compatable Boxes - soon to be launched - will also run on Linux. So BT will be able to use one operating system to run both boxes.

The new software incorporates an upgraded Iplayer, and the red button functions etc will no doubt be added added back when the new software is fully launched.

The thing I'm wondering about is whether the black boxes will be able to cope with the current software upgrade? Mine didn't, BT had to send me a new one. Prior to the upgrade that I'm in the process of looking at, there was nothing wrong with my previous black box on the old software.

Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone

Due to the high charges for using Windows CE by Microsoft. So they are moving to a linux based software which will add more features and facilities.

Clearly because BT feel the box has a long way to go. I hate to say I told you so, but...

I can absolutely guarantee you there is no future in the silver box. Upgrading to the black stb or a future one is the only real way to obtain an upgrade.

Those still on silver - I suspect is due to bad luck as most got upgraded.

I'd hold off till things become clearer. The black boxes will handle linear IPTV easily so upgrading wont be the end of the world.

I was under the impression you liked a nice compact box. Sure you said so before somewhen in the dim and distant

NO!! Sorry, my mistake, that's the other person who co-incidentally hailed from Cambridge, had a similar user name and always claimed to be cancelling Sky despite only paying tuppence a month or something for the whole package.

Its got to be a contractual issue thats forcing them to update the BT Vision boxes to non-HD replacement just ahead of Youview.
