Does anyone else wonder when they decided to write songs solely for Radio 2?

I thought Neil Tennant got into the industry as a crtic who was literally critical of the 'safe and boring' industry?

I don't think they'd appeal / get new fans, so they're just preaching to the converted?

I mean, that 'Winner' song - it's just awful, by the numbers......

Pet Shop Boys aren't "writing songs for Radio 2". They have been around for 25 years, and are one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in musical history, but unfortunately, in this age of disposable pop-stars, they are unlikely to win over any new fans. So may be they are "preaching to the converted".

There is nothing wrong with music for Radio 2. The music on there is better than the absolute shite Radio 1 play.

If you don't like it, switch off, but ion my opinion it's the best lead single they've released since "Home and Dry".

'Love, etc.' was their last good single in my opinion.

Just my opinion.

In my opinion.

Do you honestly expect Radio 1 to play the music of two 50-odd year olds? Radio 2 is perfectly fine.

Nah, 'West End Girls' and 'Opportunities' were hardly MOR. But then again nothing's really topped those two for me.

I'm not a Pet Shop Boys fan but I would listen to Radio 2 any day over the pretentious hipster rubbish that is Radio 1. Nothing wrong with Radio 2 at all from what I've heard of it.

To be fair that was only about 3 singles ago.

I love Winner. Not their best but definitely not bad. Can't wait for the album.

PSB's fell into NT's criticism of the 'new style' Smash Hits before it got cancelled (it became too 'embarrassing' to buy). From the release of 'Very', their 'look' became 'embarrasing'- instead of 'distinctive'. What they were taking i don't know. Whether that led to a fan base loss- is debateable. Their releases have been fine- apart from the Disco 2 debacle. I quite like 'Winner' but agree with a previous poster that 'Love etc' was one of their best recent releases. What's wrong with R2?! It's the 'home of the broadcasting Gods'- Ken Bruce and Steve Wright!

I really wish they had released 'The Way It Used To Be', that was a classic PSB song.

But I think Winner is great.

The other alternative is to have two tragic 50 something men writing wannabe hip songs. And we already have Madonna.

heard the new song the other day and didn't think much of it. It lacked the drama, the wit and sophistication (and the tune) you normally expect from a PSB song.

Is it going to be the first single or are they just following in Madge's footsteps of previewing random tracks to promote the new album?

It's officially the first single from their new album. It's being released on CD next month.
