Heroes or Villains?
Superheroes are generally vigilanties. I've always liked te idea that they stand for what they think is right, sometimes facing the opposition of those high in power.
Do you think that the model of a vigilante is a good example for a hero? Or do you think it's bad to set the example of rebellion? Personally, I think the values that they send forth are good ones. Think for yourself, question what you're told and, my favourite, that the right thing isn't always the popular thing. The hero that best fits my image has to be Spiderman. While he's by no means my favourite hero, he is definately the most prone to human foibles and is often depicted as unpopular by the city he is trying to protect. What are your thoughts? |

Yeah, most superheroes engage in law-enforcement without legal authority 'however', in comics, most "super-heroes" are accepted. When it comes to the over-stylized worlds of comics, you're going to have to look for the "super-heroes" who aren't accepted - they're the ones openly classed as vigilantes.
I'll be pedantic and point out that, in the Marvel-616 universe anyway, Spider-man hasn't been classed or hounded as a "vigilante" for years... easily since he joined the Avengers, I think, if not sooner. The city loved him, it was the press that hated him... He's a paid up, law-abiding, citizen. Frank Castle is most definitely a vigilante. He employs questionable tactics all in the name of his skewed vision of justice/right & wrong. Rorschach - there's another one. |
