Then you should know that the drugs and prostitutes aren't a massive part of the games. You have to go looking for them and their impact on the game is minimal and your encounters with them are utterly forgettable.

I had to think hard for a reference.
The "Pimping" mission in San Andreas, which I found by accident having blown up my previous mode of transport and needed a car.
The "Ice Cream Truck" drug dealing mission in Vice City.
Can't remember one in GTA IV, maybe there was, can't remember though.

If you have an issue with prostitutes in games Assassins Creed is worse than GTA.

Also a section of Uncharted 3 features Nate tripping out on drugs.

most children (12 year old), teenagers play COD, Battlefield or Uncharted or have done...

my younger son who is 8 plays Lego whatever and kinect animals

all i said was i drew the line at Rockstar...

for obvious reasons..

jeez
But none of the reason are obvious.

You seem to think you have taken some kind of moral stand yet you are being nothing more than morally ambiguous.

Do really want your kids to grow up loving violence but hating/not being aware of sex/sexual content? because as weird as it my sound now i know what i'd rather my kids thought was ok when they reached 18

I fail to see how that is ANY of your business, enough of the lectures already.

Its my business when somebody tries to take the moral high ground but they are being completely hypocritial in their views

Assassin's creed - killing people in violent ways, robbing people, stealing horses, using prostitues as part of the game and many other criminal in activies

Grand theft auto - Killing people, robbing people, stealing vechicles, no using prostitues as part of the game and many other criminal activies

Saying one of those games is ok but not the other is highly hypocritical and i wonder if there is any real justification behind the view

He also lets his kids play CoD online i fail to see why he accepts the violence in that

Whoa, Ill come in on this as I have an 8 year old that I play CoD with. He cant play online but I play combat training and zombies with him. but i do draw the line at sexual content the same as gdjman, when you have kids you'll realise that the way they play at armies and knights it makes cod look tame...i do the same with films, id let my kids see 18s if there isnt any sex in it...or overly adult content. a lot of the time thy surprise me by finding adult films (not pornos) boring! you can gauge how mature your children are usually and if you dont know the child you cant possibly judge

Jumping in on this one.

You know your own kids.

My boy is 8 and the games at his age rating are getting tedious for him (other than the lego games which keep him occupied for hours).

We're experimenting by letting him play the latest Spiderman (PEGI 16) as, in my view, there's nothing in there that he didn't see in the film. So far he loves and it's about right on the difficulty level.

I'd stop short at letting him play COD however. But as I said above, you know your own kids so what's fine for one is not necessarily the same for another.

I'm with Digi & Lady MacBeth on this one

That in a nutshell, its the parents responsibility and if a child react differently then it should be down to the parent to deal with it.

I would say that the comment on Rockstar is slightly unfair, GTAIV did actually take out a lot of the stuff complained about, where as Assassin Creed did add buying brothels, hiring prositutes etc. However Assassin Creed is set in the past, where as GTAIV is the set in todays world. Its easily for a child to know Assassin Creed is more of a fantasy than what GTA is, so I can see from that point of view.

I do agree with your parenting approach(es), I can't really have a go there as I watched 18 rated films from a very young age and I do agree about sexual content being a no go for young kids

But to tar games with the same brush is a bit off, especially when blanketting an entire studio. Rockstar did do Bully which actually has some educational parts to it. Midnight Club is essentially a street racer along the lines of NFS and I don't think Red Dead has any sexual content.

Anyway this is a bit off topic so this will be my last post on the subject.

However, unbeknown to Sam, his card details were stored in the machine and his son was able to buy ‘Microsoft Points'
This doesn't quite ring true to me (much like the rest of the article tbh) because almost everywhere you use your bank card or credit card online these days, offers the option to store your details for future use and convenience, and certainly where a recurring payment is taken, its fairly obvious that the details will be held on record.

Interestingly, I had a look at my Xbox live account on the website, and there is actually now a link on that page with the card/paypal details to remove the card details or payment options.

He should have just bought his child the prepay cards to be honest, would have saved a lot of crap in the first place.

Having read the article I wonder if I should

(a) call the police and report a suspected incident of a person buying an 18 certificate game with the intention of supplying to a minor.

(b) call social services and report a suspected incident of neglect on the grounds that the parent allowed their 12 year old child to play an 18 certificate game.

However I imagine neither will care, at least not until the kid grows up into a psychopath and turns up to school in a mock-military uniform and guns down the other kids - at which point the same organisations (and the Mail itself) will blame the whole thing on the gaming industry...

Hmmm... wonder if I should bookmark and come back in 3-4 years time when the kid is 15/16...
