Stuck between two phones
Hi,
I'm really in need of a new mobile phone as my old one is starting to go faulty. As my old phone is a pay as you go non smartphone, my new phone will obviously be a new smartphone. I've saw two mobiles that I am thinking of purchasing, but I am unsure which one to buy. Can anyone advise which smartphone out of these two will be the better phone? Or if anyone has any experience with the use of either phone, that may be a help too. The two phones I am considering are, Sony Xperia U Or Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Any help advice would as always be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've a Sony Xperia, what I am on this.moment. I've forgotten the model, don't think it's the 'u' though.
It is however, not only the worst phone I've ever used in my life, but it is the.worst possession I've ever owned. I've left some of the full stops between words in this post, to illustrate on of about 200.criticisms of it and would implore anyone to look for even a toy phone ahead of this. Incidentally, I started this post in November, but you type at about a line a month. It's probably been sent to the AA three times too, like any other text or call. |

The Xperia U has flashing multi-coloured lights on the bottom which seems a bit childish to me. I would go for the Samsung

so yesterday I got the ace 2 phone from the O2 shop, quite good value from the O2 shop at £199.99. Carphone warehouse, despite advertising "we will not be beaten by your network", would not match the price, they wanted £249.99 for it on O2. Am very pleased with the phone! It is going to be upgraded to android ice cream sandwich in the near future. Not sure which version the sony one runs tho. |

Hi,
Thank you so far for all the replies. They are all much appreciated. So far from the points made and the review of the Sony Xperia above, its not looking good for the Sony mobile I was thinking about. I didn't actually realise the Xperia U had a flashing light at the bottom. It did mention something about an exchangable cap, I thought that was what it meant, the bottom was just like a coloured cap. I think a big bright flashing light on a mobile phone by todays standards does seem childish, so I agree with you klendathu. coachtrip_fan99 - How do you find the Ace 2 since you've had it? Whats its good points, bad points? I know you've only had it a day but I'd appreciate any comments about it. Yes I saw O2 had knocked £30 off it just now, it does seem more expensive on all the other websites, so if I go ahead and purchase the Samsung, then I shall get it from O2. Well my old phone is a Nokia 6300, so any current smartphone is going to be a massive upgrade for me. Any other comments/replies are much appreciated. Thanks again to all who have replied so far. |

Just watched this review of the Samsung and it looks like a great phone for the money
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF2kct_rQQk Think I might snap one up as it is in my price range and quite compact which I like |

That's not intended as an insult, it's just a fact. The 2010 models were terrible but the 2011 models were significantly better and the 2012 models seem to be better again - so if you have a 2010 Xperia, any problems with it really have no bearing on the current range, even if you have a 2011 model it's still questionable how much bearing that has on the 2012 models. Not to mention, Samsung have released their fair share of poor handsets in the past as well but the faults that they had really are nothing to do with the Ace 2. |

Guess that means late 2011 and bearing.some.similarities to the phone of the OP. If somebody could've watched me type this message, they'd have seen about three.of the glitches it has in an instant. It.really will have to have gone some to have improved enough just to make it bearable to use. The phone I had before this was a.Sony Ericsson, had a fixed.key pad which helped and functions brilliantly, I'm usually easily satisfied with a phone. It's rare to upgrade to something so much worse. |

The original Neo was a cut-price version of the Arc but supply constraints surrounding camera modules meant they swapped out the 8MP sensor of the original Neo for a 5MP sensor in the Neo V. Yeah, some similarities but they are distinct, different in a number of key ways. Key amongst which is the vastly superior CPU in the U compared to the Neo/V but there should also be more up-to-date firmware and a number of other little tweaks here and there too. Quote:
Sounds like that's where the problem lies. |

I've got the Sony Xperia P and its a cracking phone and I much prefer it to Dads Samsung Galaxy and Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Don't be put off by the 'disco' lights at the bottom either as they're barely noticable and only light when used.
The Xperia P I have is the next model up from the U which although a very nice phone is crippled by only 4Gb of useable storage and no card slot, a much better bet if you can't stretch to the P (bigger screen, more storage, NFC etc), is the newly launched Sony Xperia Go for around £220 SIM free which has a 3.5" screen dual-core cpu, Android 2.3 with upgrade to ICS to come, 4Gb storage but has a microSD card slot for upto 32Gb, and is also a tough phone and waterproof to 1m. |

Just picked up a galaxy ace 2 for the wife. I use the S2 myself but have to say, the ace 2 isn't that far behind. Playing around with it, I haven't really found anything lacking on it to say it's the stripped down version of the S2.
Would recommend the ace 2 to anybody. |

hiya yeah ive been using it since friday and I really cant fault it.
have had a nokia 5800 since 2009. to me its totally amazing, so many apps!!! The only problem ive had is getting it to recognise my micro SD card out my old nokia, it may be the file format or something, because the card doesnt work in my dads android phone either! it will take you a bit of getting use to typing on it..... i could text on my old nokia with my eyes shut. literally. but your gonna have that with any phone. im not sure what else there is to say about it! i really like it. definately get whatsapp. if you have questions about it, feel free to ask me! |

Looks like the Samsung wins.
http://geekaphone.com/compare/Sony-X...ung-Galaxy-Ace But if you can stretch a little further I would definetly go for this HTC XE. http://direct.asda.com/HTC-Sensation...fault,pd.html? |

I've just this instant went ahead and purchased the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 from the O2 website, so it's getting delivered on Tuesday.
This was after watching the various reviews/videos online and of course some of the glowing endorsements of the phone here (coachtrip_fan99 & philees). coachtrip_fan99 - When I receive it on Tuesday, if I'm having any issues I think you maybe able to help me with, I'll give you a shout on here mate. Thanks again for the all replies etc, much appreciated.

I too had a choice of either the Xperia U or the galaxy ace 2. Spoke to someone at length in the carphone warehouse and we ruled out the Samsung, cant remember the exact reasons why. He tried his hardest to sell me the Nokia lumia 800 and I was tempted until I saw O2 had the Xperia P. I was worried with having a small internal memory with the U which is why I wasnt 100% sure about it. Love love love the P! I had a crappy HTC wildfire for two years and really wanted to go back to Sony, as ive never had problems with them and so glad i went back |

You can adjust the 'childish coloured disco bar' at the bottom of the Xperia U, its ONLY a notification light, to tell you when you have a message, etc, doesn't flash constantly or anything. I actually think its quite useful.

The colour of the bottom can be changed. Another cool feature on the Xperia U is the ability to display a colour (at the bottom of the phone) which stands out on the picture you are viewing.
Its the best phone £200 |
