Post-apocalyptic movies / TV shows

I found BBC's Survivors from 2008 on Netfiix last night and watched the first episodeIt was brutal! I do so love my post-apocalyptic style shows / movies.

Can anyone recommend any other things from this genre. There's a chance I'll probably have seen them already but, in the quest for new mmaterial, there's no harm in asking!

The Walking Daed can go without saying. I do love it. Although I despise Lori and Rick. I'm pleased that Rick at least appears to haave half developed a set of balls toward the end of season 2. I can't wait to meet The Governor in the next season!

The Last Train. I remember when it first aired, late ninties I think, and was repeated recently on sci fi. Shame they only made 1 series.

Bloody hell! I though I was the only person who remembered that! I thought it was great when it came out - I've not watched it in years though!

Of course there are the "living dead" films by George A Romero with the second installment "Dawn of the Dead" being most peoples favourite.

The original Survivors series from the 70's.

Threads - a BBC film from the early 80's and available in full on Youtube is set in Sheffield after a nuclear war. It's one of the most depressing films you'll ever watch.

The Last Train I remember from what 1999? I haven't seen it since but it was amazing. I don't think it's on DVD yet...pops over to Amazon to find out....no it's not.

The Stand is one of my very favourite books. I though that Gary Sinese and co. did it a great justice in the TV serialisation.

And in a similar vein Threads, the movie which scarred a generation of Brit kids. Also on a similar theme, Testament.

The 1981 BBC version of The Day Of The Triffids. Can be picked up new on DVD for less than a fiver.

ITV's Noah's Castle is a forgotten gem of 70's children's telly, about a group of teens dealing with the breakdown of society in the late 70s as the UK collapsed into civil war and revolution. It is available on DVD for about a tenner.

Another kids show that dealt with a post-apocalyptic aftermath was the BBC's The Changes. First episode HERE.

Both of those may have been made for 'childrens television' but there is nothing particularly childish about either of them. Great telly from a time when even childrens tv drama was taken seriously and was allowed to be challenging and dark.

Slighty OT, but only just (Dystopian, if not strictly post-apocalypse), I'd also recommend The Guardians, from 1971, set in a future fascist England.

The Stand was awesome.

However, Falling Skies? I saw 2 episodes and hated it. Also had bad reviews. I guess it has a lot of clingy viewers that it's still airing.

They're going to be remaking The Stand at some point in the near future.

The first season was good, the second was brilliant.

The first season got better as it went along. The second season has been better still. It's beginning to highlight the virtue of patience. Already renewed for a third season.

Perhaps you are right. I had no patience because I was trying to decide between Falling Skies and Boardwalk Empire on what I had to watch.

I chose Boardwalk and I chose wisely. Love that show

I'll fuss and moan like with all remakes but I WILL end up watching it. I'm already ashamed of myself for watching the Total Recall remake and I haven't even watched it yet! Colin Farrell a doug Quaid? What. The. Actual. Hell??

I already discounted the Total Recall remake on the grounds that it stars Colin Farrell.......!

I wouldn't regard the disabling of all advanced technology as an apocalypse because, unlike a nuclear war or a pandemic, it wouldn't be fatal.

You wouldnt be saying that if you were on a kidney dialysis machine.

Actually it would almost certainly be fatal on a mass level, and would undoubtedly lead to millions of deaths through starvation in the first years. Even in the first day it would lead to tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths depending on how quickly it happend, with anything from life saving medical equiptment to air traffic control and on-board aircraft computers failing, along with nuclear power stations, hydro electric dams etc etc. The list is pretty much endless for those of us in the northern hemisphere.

Zombi,

I don't know if you're into animated shows or not, but there was this superb post-apocalyptic web series called "Afterworld" (aired in 2007). I cannot recommend it more as a post-apocalyptic fan myself. I'm not hugely into animated stuff myself (I mean I like Shrek and generally like Pixar/Dreamworks animations), but I wouldn't say I'm a rabid fan or anything. But this "Afterworld" show got me hooked like a crack cocaine addict lol. You should be able to find it on NetFlix if you're interested in watching it.

The show is very grounded despite there being many sci-fi elements and what makes the show stand out is the central overarching mystery of what caused the apocalyptic event, which will force you to keep watching. Unlike most post-apoc stories, the apocalyptic event depicted in Afterworld is the be-all-end-all of the story and not just a plot device to wipe the human population out and send civilization to the dark ages.

Don't get me wrong, Afterworld is hardly groundbreaking or earth-shattering and it does have the old tried-and-tested conspiracy plot running throughout it, but it approaches the genre in such a fresh and creative way that you will applaud it for its ambition/boldness (at least I did). It really examines the post-apoc world in such a interesting and detailed way in regards to the different groups of survivors that are out there. I honestly cannot believe why Afterworld hasn't been made into a live action TV series yet, it's better than a lot of the drivel on TV nowadays IMO . It would be perfect on a cable channel like AMC or HBO. I would be like the number one fan .

Here's the link for the Afterworld wiki just in case you'd like to read up on what the show is about exactly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterworld_%28TV_series%29
