The Sooty Show

Im sure there are a great deal of us who remember this tv show.

Are their any plans on Fremantle releasing the full series on DVD?

Another fan here, I much preferred the Harry Corbett era as the show used to end with Sooty and Sweep as members of the Alan Braden Band and had a more showbiz feel. Matthew was OK, but the show seemed to be less fun and had a cheaper feel.

Going through threads on here noticed you worked on Rainbow and now Sooty that's some claim to fame.

"Bye bye, everyone, bye bye..." - a resigned Harry Corbett holding head in hands as rampant Sooty blundgens Sue to death with the magic wand..

The live audience was done away with after the Spring 1980 series. After that, the show was set in the Sooteries cottage.

It was never the same. The golden era was the Harry Corbett Thames era in the early to mid seventies.
Also even after he retired after his heart attack in 1976, he kept making cameos for a few years afterwards and did most of the touring version of the show until he died in 1989.

Harry Corbett was sadly before my time, although from the clips I have seen, he was very entertaining and his shows seemed funnier than when Matthew took over.

It would be interesting to know how many Harry Corbett shows survive. I can imagine the Thames series from the 70s must still be in the archives.

I imagine the water pistol manufacturing industry went into sharp decline after the canning of this show.

I wonder if the reason the format change in 1980, from the variety/sketch show to the individual episodes, may have been down to Matthew having to see out the reminder of his dad's contract when he took over from Harry in 1976 before being allowed to put his own stamp on the show. Just a thought...

I remember when Matthew had sooty squirt Nick hancock on TTIAO and Nick wasent best pleased. He just got up off his seat looked annoyed and opened a bottle of water and tipped the whole contents on Matthews head and then sat down and didnt say a word.

I know Sooty is more for kids but I presume he couldnt take a joke.

Sooty, Sue and Sweep-one-time stars, reduced to session work, doing squeaking noises on Beastie Boys' Intergalactic, by1998.

The worst thing on the show was Scampi. Why didnt they leave it as the trio.

Still we need to see them releasing dvds of each series.

I remember that which was quite funny, & Nick Hancock should have known the Water Pistol is one of Sootys traits when Mathew Corbett & Sooty were invited on as a guest.

Loved The Sooty Show when i was a kid, although i'm just too young to remember Harry Corbett, & the variety shows, only remember The Sooty Show when they were in the House.

Harry Corbett was definitely my favourite host. I only saw Matthew's version years later when my kids started to watch and enjoy Sooty. The simplicity and humour of the early Harry Corbett shows was great. Also not too many characters, just Sooty and Sweep mostly, and above all no annoying Soo. Harry Corbett was wonderful patiently "listening" to Sooty and relaying what he said. It just seemed to work better with him somehow than with the more upbeat style Matthew had.

I loved Sooty, but Sweep was definitely my favourite.

He was my favourite too. You knew you'd watched too much Sooty when you could work out what Sweep was saying.

Went to a couple of the live tour shows back in the day. Matthew Corbett was brilliant at having 2 levels of humour running through the show, one for the kids and the other.... definitely not!!!

Its a shame Matthew sold Sooty I would of thought he would of kept it incase ITV wanted to bring it back.

I know he was ill. Just a shame that Matt's children didnt want to do it.
