As a commuter I have decided to get a Kindle 3G...I'm just not sure whether to get the Keyboard or the Touch version. At the moment I'm leaning towards Keyobard.

I've so far only held and played around with the Keyboard version and I was very impressed with it and how durable it seemed. I also like the idea of not having to wory about getting fingerprint marks all over the screen/having to get a screen protector.

But then I think the Touch is the latest version so should I be buying it for that reason? Is the Touch screen/quality the same as the Keyboard version or different?

Any advice would be much appreciated

I've had both and infinitely prefer the Touch. Wouldn't worry about fingermarks.

Don't forget the one in between the keyboard and touch. I preferred it when I was looking at the different models.

I had the original Kindle which broke a little while ago and I just got the Touch and love it.

Only drawback is that i sometimes turn pages when I am just putting it down cause its easy to hit the screen.

But it is so easy to use I can do most things one handed, which is great when I am reading in bed.

My wife has the basic Kindle but now doesnt't use it because it's not touch screen and uses Kindle on her iPhone instead, so, I'd say get the Touch.

doesn't the experimental browser only work on the full web in 3G on the keyboard version? On the touch version you only get full acces on wifi - on 3g you just get access to the kindle store, and maybe a couple of other sites, I think...

Correct.

I own an 18 month-old "keyboard" model with 3G and it is great, but if I was buying a new one I'd buy the £89 model. The touch one is thicker and heavier than the £89 one and having tried it in a shop the touch mechanism is a little too sensitive for my liking - I've heard reports from people saying they turned the page with their hair, or by putting it down, plus there's the whole fingermarks issue, especially when reading somewhere hot.

Do bear in mind that the browser isn't the reason to buy the Kindle - it is very, very slow, cumbersome to navigate, obviously black & white only, can't handle pop-ups, you can't play videos or music, you can't download files... It is fine for checking e.g the news headlines and your email, but anything else is a bit iffy.

If you want a web browser buy a tablet.

Funnily enough, my experience of using both is that I much more frequently accidentally turned pages by catching the buttons on the side of the keyboard Kindle

You are right - the only sites available are Amazon (for obvious reasons) and Wikipedia (I think because you can look up words in books). However, it wouldn't surprise me if ultimately they withdraw general access across the board. I'm painfully aware of this because I justified my 3G Touch purchase by telling myself I could access GMail etc. when overseas for free, before I realised that Amazon had changed things.

I have to agree. Every time I have used the Kindle browser it has been very painful. Better to find wifi access for your other portable devices.

i got the keyboard. browser on 3G is great. effectivly free 3G internet although of course no audio or video and only kindle books or txt files download.....

the browser is not guaranteed. hence "experimental". but pretty much all websites ok if you go via m google com and use the mobilise option. this also enables links on webpages which otherwise dont work because theres only one browser window.

i agree desktop websites take much longer to load. and can crash the device.

this post made on my kindle.

..... no problem reading newspapers from all over on my 3G k3. browsing & posting on ds easy. mobile or desktop version. google translate works. maps. hotmail. etc .......

if commuting - eg on trains - sometimes the browser glitches as 3G goes out of range and device auto switches to edge or gprs ......

With my Kindle Touch I can turn the page without, ironically, touching the screen. It's not resistive or capacitive, like phone or tablet screen. It has sensors looking just above the screen.

I've not found finger-prints to be an issue. I thought I'd want physical page-turn buttons, but that turned out not to be an issue either. I think the UI is vastly easier to use with a touch device.

I don't think the 3G Touch is worth the extra money over the WiFi Touch. It's a lot of extra money, most places have WiFi, and you can load up with books before going out of range. The web browser is so crippled as to be irrelevant.

Not really on topic but though id mention it here.

Poundland have Phillips KIndle 3 leather cases in stock, seen them on sale elsewhere for £19.

Finger prints would be a huge issue for me as I mainly use my Kindle when I'm on holiday, and as I usually find myself in hot climates & sweating rather a lot all those greasy marks on the screen would be a problem. Also when I'm away I keep my Kindle in an Aquapac, which would almost certainly keep triggering the page turns etc. Give me buttons any day.

As I said earlier, I didn't like the non-touch version because I kept triggering page turns accidentally by catching the buttons on the side. It's actually quite difficult to pick up and not turn pages. Not been a problem with the Touch.

The best thing to do is go to a shop and try them out for yourself. We all have different preferences...I prefer the keyboard kindle.

Please read my post...

I said that when I read my Kindle most I am on holiday (yes, I already have a Kindle - the keyboard model) and to stop it getting splashed, sweated on etc. I keep it in an Aquapac, which is a rubbery bag. This would keep touching the screen and trigger page turns as the Kindle Touch screen isn't capacitive like a phone screen but instead uses infra red sensors, so you can turn the screen with e.g. a stylus if you wish. I prefer buttons as they won't be triggered by something touching the screen, and to be honest when I pick up or hold my Kindle I kind of know where the buttons are, so I avoid those areas.

And I "kind of know" where the screen is when I pick up my Touch I just find it easier to pick up a Touch and avoid the screen than to pick up a non-Touch and avoid the buttons. YMMV.

Tescos have them out on display for people to try, also same price as Amazon.

We went into try, and wife settled for touch Kindle, due to pushing buttons on the side when handling normal Kindle.

Trouble with that is it's not a real test. It's not until for example you are reading in bed and adjust your position while holding the device you discover that it's easy to move pages accidentally.
