The only time Empire are not up Peter Jacksons arse is when they're up Chrisopher Nolans.

Thanks for that. Are there any spoilers in the review? If so, I'll avoid it.

Is that the case for the many other reviews currently praising TDKR too?

Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway seem to be getting the best actor reviews, Tom Hardy is having a tough time because they keep bringing up the Joker in comparison.

Empire’s reviews have been a joke ever since they began. They depend on the major studios and distributors to fill their pages with ads and far be it for me to say in return they expect positive reviews from Empire. No.....that couldn’t possibly be the case...

That is kinda reflected in their grading system.

5* = classic
4* = excellent
3* = good
2* = fair
1* = tragic

So even a 2* movie is "fair" (which I read to mean average).

Movies considered by some to be the worst of all time (Batman and Robin and Battlefield Earth) got rated 2 stars by Empire. What the hell does it take to get 1? (for the record - the Love Guru did get one star)

I think Batman And Robin got 3 stars when it was first released! I've got the issue somewhere, I'll check.

Empire certainly aint what it used to be. 5 star reviews for Attack Of The Clones and Superman Returns?

Looking forward to TDKR though. Total Film have given it 5 stars too.

Comment below TDKR review nails it:

Reading that review it seem smore like the reviewer thinks it's a four star film. Even hear of a 5 star review accusing the Godfather of "sagging in the middle". So basically a far too excited Empire team boosting the ratting to make us all feel good, but when it looms round on Disc it will drop a star as per usual. Oh well they are Empire and as No:1 they can do what they like. ...*

I'd never buy Empire for the reviews, only features and previews.

How about, and call me crazy for suggesting this, its a five star film? There hasn't been a negative review for TDKR yet.

One big American critic gave it 5/5 and apparently he hasn't done that since 2006.

I thought you would turn up sooner or later

To be fair though, if you reviewed something and said it sagged in the middle, would you then proceed to give it top marks (take Batman out of the equation if that helps) surely it warrants a slide to down the meter to the next star down?

To be honest it depends on how much it sags. If it is a long 15/20minutes fine but I wouldn't really let a 5/maybe 10 minute sag drag down my overall opinion of a film if the content itself is good.

It's hard to judge some reviews for TDKR a Chinese review came out a week ago which came across as A) mostly negative and B) someone who couldn't get over The Joker but then still proceeded to give a B+.

The Guardian, Telegraph and, yes, Digital Spy reviewers just raved about TDKR on their twitter feeds. Expect their write-ups soon.

i disagree about empire. i used to think that was the case but ever since giing prometheus 3 stars (after going on and on about it) i think they are less biased.

after the dark knight and the brilliant inception i doubted DKR would be anything less than great

This happened with The Dark Knight, I remember review after review was saying it was amazing and even was the highest rated film ever on IMDB at some point. But TDK did live up to the reviews and hype, I know TDKR will too.

TDK is a brilliant film and deserving of 5* ratings, but I don't understand why Batman Begins isn't ranked similarly, it's as good if not better IMHO. While it has one of the most standout performances in film history, TDK feels like it has one strand too many, it's unnecessarily weighty in the last third, I would consider BB to be a more perfect film.

I agree and think it's a shame he's being compared like this. They're completely 2 different entities. If Bane came before Joker i bet everyone would be raving about his performance.

My original point regarding Empire has been misconstrued as a negative towards the film.
I'm sure TDKR is a 5* film.

My dig is at how predictable Empire are.

I used to love Empire, believe it or not I'm in the 100th issue, but that was when it was fun and didn't see itself as the movie bible - its not!!!!!

Yes, but Ridley Scott isn't "flavour of the month" so it's less dangerous to give him 3 stars.
Christopher Nolan is flavour of the month.....and last few years, that's why it is predictable.

Although 3* still seems to be Good, with a rating system like that it would be hard pressed to say anything was that bad.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I love about reviews though is that if they state a film that a person is a fan of as brilliant that person will say "there you go see they are raving about it". But if they said the film that person likes is rubbish then they say "I never listen to critics I always form opinions on my own"

I normally dodge and weave reviews like the plague (I really shouldn't have come in here I know, but slow day on the forums) because when I go into a film I want my expectations based on my feelings and not artificially raised or lowered due to reviews.

Fingers crossed this film will meet my expectations and I will have a good time at the cinema.

He isn't flavour of the month though. He must be flavour of the past 7 years. Or he makes good films.

With Prometheus it seemed people thought it was guaranteed to be a 5 star with the amount of coverage its got. Empire aren't that shallow they don't give good reviews to please a director.

Well, we'll agree to disagree but imo they are exactly that shallow and have been for years.
