That's fine in theory, but if you look at the current coefficient standings it's almost impossible for us to actually gain (or lose) a European spot after losing the spot we had this season. We were 15th, thanks to a sustained period of overachieving, we're now scheduled to be 27th, over 12 points behind 15th place (which is the point at which you gain an extra spot). For comparison, the whole of the Premier League, Champions League winner and all, gained 15 points for last season. It's not an exaggeration to say that there is no realistic chance, whatsoever, of the SPL gaining a European spot over at least the next five years.
There's also no chance of losing one from next season on because we'd have to be ranked as one of the two worst leagues in Europe for that to happen (i.e. be worse than Andorra or San Marino). We're basically in a coefficient no man's land where we can neither lose a place nor gain one - all it affects is the round in which teams will enter the competition.
