This thread is for real Corrie saddos like me ...

I always remembered seeing an episode of Coronation Street from the 70s with a real train rumbling over the viaduct.

I never managed to find the episode again, even though I trawled all of my DVD box sets and YouTube in the hope of finding. I started to think that I was just making it up, but I was convinced that the viaduct that was part of the set from 1968 - 1982 had a real, working railway line at the top of it for at least part of its time on Corrie.

Just now, as I was looking for something completely unrelated, I found this magnificent picture of the Corrie set from 1970, complete with a train on top of the viaduct!

I'm guessing this is the first outdoor set before it's move to the current location in 1982.

The Bing map shows roughly the area it once stood, and as you can see there is a railway line that runs into the Science Museum, the line you can see in the above picture must've been lifted at some point.

I agree, it's very interesting.... I'm gutted ITV didn't build the new larger set nearer a proper working tram line as real trams (instead of CGI) would have been good.

Yeah it's the first outdoor set that they used from 1968 until the construction of the current one in 1982.

Thanks for introducing me to 'Bing' - I didn't know that you could get those kind of angles! They are indeed the same arches, though I'm not sure which one is Coronation Street's ... might have to take a closer look.

They're still part of the ITV complex and make occasional appearances in episodes - the exterior of the strip club that Kylie was working in recently was one of the arches.

No problem. Bing is very useful for mapping in the respect you can get more than one look at an area of interest. Other cartographers are available ,

Davenports where Sally Webster had the affair with the car dealership man is in one of the units (or was.) Think it's next to the strip club you mention.

Lloyd's cab office was in the same vicinity the other week I believe.

That set looks so much better than the current one. Well except for the overbearing factory on the other side, who thought that would be a good idea.

I'm surprised the thou think it looks better. Seeing it on screen it looks terrible - I can't believe that they used it for nearly 15 years.

I think that the 'real' viaduct definitely adds something though.

The building on t'other side is the short-lived block of flats - maisonettes - that stood there from 1968 - 1971. I don't think I've ever seen a photo that shows their full height until this one - they were absolutely massive!
