Which would you recommend to someone who isnt fussed about streaming content from another pc etc, and only wants to watch live video and install private channels so I can get ustream etc?

I have the roku which suits me down to the ground. I have heard very good things about the wd device so I think you will be ok with either.
If you are happy using plex iplayer and Netflix then the roku is more than capable. I also watch freesat via my elgato on my mac mini wich works fine.
If you go for the roku and don't care about angry birds or 1080p then the roku lt is great value for 50 quid.

I own a Roku LT and a WDTV Live Streaming and for me the WD wins hands down every time.
If you just want a pure online streaming box and nothing else then the Roku is a good buy, but the WDTV Live Streaming is currently £70 on Amazon.co.uk, only £20 more than a Roku LT and does a whole lot more than the Roku.

The WDTV does online streaming, playback from local USB devices, streams from other devices on the same network and plays just about every format there is (the £99 Roku 2 XS has a USB channel though it only plays a very limited number of formats which have to encoded to a specific standard).

The Roku has a lot more online channels/apps and allows anyone to create a Roku channel app and both have Netflix, though WDTV has the big companies like Flickr, Facebook, Spotify, Youtube, Deezer, Picassa, Playjam games and with each firmware update WD are adding more channels, though they are going for quality over quantity.
It's also worth remembering a lot of the private channels on Roku are hit and miss and often taken down due to copyright issues and blocked by Roku.

With the WDTV it's plug in and go. That's it.
With the Roku you have to register online on the Roku website via a PC, Tablet, iPhone, etc.. and create a Roku account in order to activate the device before you can use it. This includes giving Roku your name, address, phone number and credit/debit card or paypal details in case you buy any apps (not all the apps are free), only after doing that can you activate the device for use. And once your all activated and get going Roku sticks banner ads on your TV.

If you want to use Netflix, and also want to use a VPN, Proxy or DNS redirect service like Unblock-US or UnoTelly to access Netflix's US catalogue then the WDTV very easily allows you to do this. The Roku doesn't allow this and to access Netflix US on a Roku you have to change the DNS on your router and create a Roku account with a fake US address and either a US ctredit card or US paypal account.

But to answer your question, if you just want something to watch private channels and access ustream, then Roku is the one that will do that.
