Let's discuss Deep Purple
With the death of Jon Lord I thought we should have a discussion about Deep Purple.
Which 'era' and albums are your favourite? I shall be predictable and say the Glover/Gillan years are my favourite followed by the Coverdale/Hughes years ![]() In Rock has to be my favourite album because it was just so strong from start to finish. Although, they had many great albums with Machine Head, Burn and the live album Made In Japan deserving of much praise. |

Well In Rock is fantastic, though my 2nd fav album is Burn, closely followed my Machine Head.
The other MK 2 (a) albums are very good although Who Do We Think We Are is a little tired. Stormbringer I don't care too much for as you can tell Ritchie Isn't Interested. whilst the MK 4 album Come Taste The Band has come alive to me with the recent remaster. The 3 MK1 albums are Ok show potential, of The later albums. Perfect Strangers is the best followed by Purpendicular. The remainder are Ok but for me Ians Voice is just not what it was. Whilst the MK 5 album Slaves And Masters is not too bad but I wasnt a fan of Joe Lynn Turner in Rainbow The late great Ronnie James Dio blew him away everytime. |

It may be no surprise to learn Purple are one of my all time favourite bands, and this news is a real choker.
I'm predictable when it comes to my favourite era, which is the original Mk2 stage. Those albums are all rock classics, with Machine Head among the best rock albums ever. I dont dislike the non Gillan eras, and have a soft spot for Mk1, but for me, the Gillan times are the best. They survive until today as an amazing live band, with Steve Morse doing a superb job in replacing Mr Blackmore. I recall the last tour they did with Jon, and saw one of the early shows, but the tour was postponed when Gillan became ill. Jon retired, to be replaced by the admirable Don Airey, and the cancelled dates were rescheduled. I went to one, and it was the usual great show, with Don slotting in well, but midway through, the lights went down as the opening to Perfect strangers struck up. That great organ sound was still there, then the lights came on, and Jon was sat there playing. What a reaction that got from the crowd, and one of my most memorable rock moments. |

Gillan was brilliant, the man could scream in perfect pitch. Not many singers can say that

Made in Japan for me, had it on in the car only this morning before I heard the sad news. My number one track of all time, from any genre is Highway Star. I was too young to have seen Deep Purple at their height, but did see them at Knebworth doing Perfect Strangers and a few years ago at the BIC, where, even though no spring chicken, I couldn't resist a headbang wit my heroes playing I front of me.

Got to speak up for Rod Evans here and for #1 era. Rod sang BIRD HAS FLOWN and LALENA two of my all-time favourite DP songs.

My favourite Deep Purple albums are Deep Purple in Rock, Machine Head and Burn.
Live albums the one and only Made in Japan. It still feels fresh whenever I listen to it. |

I love the MKII lineup but over the years have developed a real soft spot for Burn and later on Come Taste the Band. Tommy Bolin was a very good guitarist who's life was sadly cut short. Although DP really only existed in name at that stage, they still had a great live show. I also consider Purpendicular to be one of the finest non Richie albums.

I've never been a huge Deep Purple fan, but I do really like 'Burn'. David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes are both fantastic hard rock vocalists and sound great together, while the songs are all top-notch. The Gillan albums all have their share of classic tracks, but I've never liked his voice much, regardless of how technically capable he may be. He's fine with heavier material but I don't think he suits more bluesy songs at all, especially not compared to someone like Coverdale.

Loved the coverdale era but to be fair its almost impossible to pick any real favourite time. The band spawned so many legendary musicians who many themselves went on to create other legendary bands,

There have been a few albums since then, and they're not bad at all, but will always suffer in comparison to the classics. They are actually talking of recording a new album at the moment. |

My favourite band - the only era I have no albums from is the Mk 1, I have the high profile tracks from that era on various compilations though.
Ian Gillan is the real soul of Purple - playful, funny, game for a laugh, hard working and apparently without much ego. The recruitment of Steve Morse definitely gave the band a new lease of life and Don Airey continues the Hammond tradition with the aplomb of the talented veteran his is. |

Of the various Deep Purple singers, I think Glenn Hughes has maintained his voice the best. He is still as brilliant as he was back then.

Well DP have always been my favourite band and to say I am upset at the death of Jon would be an understatment.
Machine Head is my fave studio album but it is live where they really come into their own. Made in Japan is one of my top 3 live albums and got a good airing on number 11 today in tribute. |

The first three albums I bought out of my first weeks wages when I was 17 in late 1970 were, In rock, Led Zep 2 and Sabbaths paranoid.
I remember Speed king blasting out on our old stereogram, full volume....oh joy. ...

I am big Purple fan but only really of their pre 90,s stuff except for Joe Lyn Turners efforts on Slave and masters? dreadful
I enjoy the free spirit and naievity of the first 3 albums with Rod and Nick, In Rock is awesome and way ahead of its time. Made in Japan must be the best live album ever, tracks like Smoke on the water are OK if a little plodding on Machine Head but with the live album WOW what a difference Coverdale era is pleasant enough some decent stuff, Burn Mistreated, etc,Perfect Strangers is a strong return to form thereafter Im afraid it is a bit downhill. I like the occasional track from Battle Rages On. No mater how hard I try I just cant get into Steve Morse. I dont doubt he is a good guitarist he simply comes across as having no style or personality to add to the songs. Whereas Richie has these in abundance. Yes he may be a fruitcake, kidding on he is Blackadder 2 but the man is a genius. I also hate to say it but think its time for Ian to retire gracefully. I appreciate he is in his 60 but he just cant do the songs like they need to be done. Early stuff, the 80 stuff and even some of his solo work in early 90 the voice is outstanding now he is a pale imitation As for Jon Lord a true keyboard magician and by all accounts a bloody nice chap. RIP big man you music lives on |
