I cannot remember him ever doing stunts purely to be noticed and having to constantly re-invent himself...........unlike this daft old trout who has certainly seen better days.

Please!

Michael was a huge star in the 80s but since the early 90s he was more known for a dodgy nose job, his skin turning white and child sex claims.

To us, who follow the media drivel, yes, but the huge population of the world who don't, still know his music, and that's what keeps him famous.

Regardless of the reasons for Michael Jackson's fame - the point still stands, he was always more famous than Madonna....
So asking if Madonna is "still" the most famous makes no sense. She never was. Infact, Michael's death actually made him more well-known to the young generation.

Was Madonna ever the most famous person in the world in the first place?? No. In the 1980s, there was MJ. She wasn't even the most famous at her peak. So she certainly isn't now.

She's looking a touch desperate these days and the music is secondary, but you can acknowledge the fact she has survived when many of her contemporaries have crumbled.

How do people know Madonna is/was/never the most famous woman in the world?

I'm interested in what makes people such experts in saying this.

I'd argue she is one of the most well known and well recognised names and brands. Mention Madonna to anyone, either young/old and I am sure they will know who you are talking about. There are very few people who are known instantly like that. She hasn't had a 30 year career, countless number 1 albums and over 300 million sold without people not knowing who she is. She is an icon of pop culture whether people like it or not.

The initial question was the most famous person, not the most famous woman.

She could have a claim to being the most famous female popstar, perhaps.

I actually think Queen Elizabeth II is the most famous person in the world. Her portrait has been printed over a billion times.
You think you have a picture of her now in your wallet on your money. Her face is on the money in 10 countries.
Her face is on stamps too

Madonna should be renamed to Hagonna, Pastitonna, or Wreaksofdesperationonna IMO

Have already responded to the original post, thanks.

You're the one bringing up dead entertainers with pedophiliac tendencies and commenting on fellow posters.

Glad you liked it.

Madonna is an embarrassment lately.
To think she was an icon and now you see her new videos, it's hilarious

Wow. There are some friendly faces on this thread!
In answer to the OP, no, I don't think so. Maybe the queen as some have suggested, or even Kate Middleton, or Barack Obama or even Simon flipping Cowell!

Not sure why the Jackson fans can't like Madonna too, and vice versa? They both had their best years in the 80s and carried on working. They both had some die-hard fans and presumably picked up a few new ones on the way. Why the animosity?! It's a bit "my dad's bigger than your dad"!!!

Was he really?

Madonna has had more number 1 albums and singles than Michael ever did. Madonna has also had several tours which had out grossed Michaels own tours.

She has had more lasting success than he did. He never recovered from the child sex claims. For all Madonna's faults she has never been in that situation.

She's not more famous than Jesus.

Only the Beatles managed that

That all has nothing to do with fame... I'm not even a big Michael Jackson fan.. but, in my opinion he is more well known.

And as somebody posted earlier - Queen Elizabeth is probably the most famous person of all.

The debate was never about "the most famous woman"...

And, nobody argued she wasn't one of the most well known people in the world ... She just isn't THE most well known. The very young kids of today don't have a clue who she is, as far as I've experienced... But they almost all know Michael Jackson and what he's about.

Of course young kids know who Madonna is. Head over to Youtube and you will see her videos are filled with comments from Lady Gaga fans. Madonna also had Nicki Minaj and Justin Timberlake feature on some of her more recent tracks and had LMFAO perform with her at the Superbowl - which had an audience of one billion I may add. Madonna also saw her songs have an entire episode of Glee dedicated to her! A tweet by Justin Bieber saying he wanted a career like Madonna also got retweeted by his fans over a million times.

How bizzare to suggest teenagers don't know who she is! lol They know her alright.

I love Michael Jackson but his memory is tainted by the child abuse allegations. I'd say sadly that is what most people think of when they remember him thesedays. I wouldn't kid myself otherwise. Its also why alot of people avoid his material.
