HTC One X or Galaxy S3, need advice for a new phone :)

Hiya, just wondering if anyone who owns either of these phones, or is knowledgeable and neutral can give me some advice on which is better. Currently I have an iPhone 4 which comes out of contract in mid August. Been browsing and seen a few offers around that are quite tempting in the "half price sale" thing at the car phone warehouse. The two phones that stand out as similar to my iPhone are the HTC One X and the Galaxy S3.

My main uses are;
- Web browsing
- Music player (I like the fact that the S3 can have an SD card of up to 64GB or so I've been told)
- Some gaming, nothing major purely when I'm bored on the train or on dinner at work
- Taking pictures, used to do it regularly but nice to have a decent camera.

I've played a bit on them in store. I preferred the more solid feel of the HTC than the S3, but at the same time I can appreciate that having the SD card expansion and a change of battery can be very appealing features. Both had excellent screens, though I think the HTC edged it for me. Only thing that is making me weary about the HTC is that I remember reading about the HTC desire getting dust under the screen, so is this an issue with the One X or have them managed to get rid of it?

Overall I suppose whichever I go for will be decent phones. But it would be my first android. Are they difficult to use, set up etc? Some people say that they are, but I'm ok technical wise.

So what is people's experiences of these two phones? And which do you think is the better one?

Thanks
platelet

Personally I have a S3 and am very happy with it, coming from an HTC Desire. Main thing that put me off the One was the fixed battery. I've had too many devices in the past where the battery degraded to useless

Don't be frightened of Android, it's very flexible and there's a lot you can tinker with but the same can be said for windows etc. Just because you can doesn't mean you'll need to

I have a One X and love it. Having said that I played around with a SIII in a shop the other day and liked it.

Had a Desire before and neither phones have ever had dust under the screen, even though they spend most of their time in my jeans pocket, no case, just a screen guard. (That has a couple of specks, but that we me sticking it onto the screen)

I love the camera on the One X. It is instant, you can go straight to the camera from the lock screen without having to unlock, you can hold the button and take a dozen pictures in a couple of seconds in case anyone blinks or to chose the best pic.
You can even be shooting HD video and press the shutter button and take full res pictures during the video.

I think both are great phones.

That camera feature sounds really good, and the HD shooting is another appealing feature. Is the camera something the HTC edges?

Same with me, for most of my iPhone's life I've never had a case. It is only recently I've started using a case and that's because my Dad bought me one, who had been nagging me to get one for ages. Funny thing is I had never dropped my iPhone in the whole time I had owned it up and till having a case. The case I have is a flip one, and it slides in from the top. One day due to sunshine I lifted the flip part, angled my phone at a downward slant (in hindsight a very bad idea!), and the phone slid out of the case and hit the floor. Lucky me it was on grass

Had the One X but it had a lot of problems so sold it and got a Galaxy S3 and am very pleased with it! The One X felt more solid but i am able to change the battery cover on the Galaxy S3

I also fing Touchwiz better, and also being able to have an SD card is an advantage

What kind of problems did you have?

Anika, thanks for the link, it was a very useful video.

OP - A guy at work got a HOX on O2 just after launch. He had trouble with poor battery life and poor signal. HTC had released updates to fix these things but O2 had not passed them on so he ditched the HOX and O2 and got a HOS on Orange. I suppose the moral here is don't get your phone from the networks but use P4U or CPW as then it will be "sim free" and you will get updates as soon as they are ready.

Try both phones - the S3 is better (very very slightly) but some prefer the look and feel of the HOX. Amazingly Samsung have actually done a better job with their skin than HTC this time. The Nature UX (not Touchwiz) is lighter and closer to stock ICS than Sense 4.0. Many like sense though.

Personally I would get a Galaxy Note over these two any day of the week. And I did. In you boat I would wait until the Note 2 comes out. You list web browsing first and no phone can compete with the 1280 x 800 5.3" screen of the Note. As good as native apps are on the iPhone it is horrible to browse the web on - 3.5" just can't give you that experience. I would guess the Note 2 would have a sd card slot as well given the fact the the S3 has one.

The only problem is that the One X in the USA is a dual core device, while everywhere else it is quad core. I don't know if this makes a difference, but it could improve responsiveness but reduce battery life compared to the one in the review.

Still a nice review (until he says the GS3 is a better phone because it is a "brand", which only matters if the buyer is a sheep that wants to follow the crowd, not someone looking for the best phone).

HTC have admitted a hardware fault with some One X phones. Something to do with signal dropping, battery is also supposed to be poor
