Any decent Blu-Ray player should be able to play .mkv files via a usb port from an external drive.
Most .mkvs play with no problem but unfortunately it's not an exact science: sometimes they don't play at all, sometimes there's no sound and sometimes it says it won't play and then it plays perfectly.
I've found that an .mkv without sound will play perfectly on a computer and when burnt to DVD. Why this is, I've no idea.

it's important to realise that mkv is just the container. it can contain all sorts of video types.

Stream from your PC with this: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/

Or with this: http://tversity.com/

Both will convert mkv files into something compatible "on the fly" while streaming. If you're using a PS3, they won't even need to be fully converted, just "remuxed" from one container (mkv) to one the PS3 can handle.

Or you could use MKV2VOB or TSMUXER to convert them in advance, and then stream them or play them locally.
