Its a badly written, poorly constructed story that happens to have a lot of sex in it. Dont bother. Wish I hadnt, that's a couple of hours of my life I'm not getting back.

"Fifty Shades Of Grey" is a vacuous, repetitive and tedious book which is poorly constructed.

The beginning has to be the most boring beginning that I have had the misfortune to read.

I didn't read further than page 2 as I was yawning too much.

But did you pay for the book? In which case, the author has won, and you have lost.

I'm baffled by how a book which is so widely disparaged is apparently so widely owned (even if not actually read).

I always use the Kindle free sample facility. I used to read the first couple of pages in the book shop, now I don't need to.

I saw a middle aged woman reading it on the bus in book form the other day.

Ah, good choice!

It's interesting that the success of this book was initially attributed to it being in electronic form, so that nobody had to be embarrassed by its physical manifestation. But that seems to have changed. I suppose that once popularity exceeds a critical mass, embarrassment in book choice is no longer a factor.

Its your classic boy meets girl, but with poor writing, a lot of repetative sex, unrealistic plotlines, yet an ability to addict some people (despite fear of book snobs, I'm one of the ones who got into it)

You can get a lot of things for free on the Net, but that wasn't what I asked.

Clearly a lot of people have paid for something that many of them claim to think is crap, because the author has made a great deal of money.

A lot of people have got it for free too, which was addressing the point you made to stud about the author 'winning'. The author will have made a lot of money regardless of sales in any case as she would have got a fat advance from the publishers and the film rights have been sold for millions.

How do you know that people that think it's crap payed for the book? The book is crap, but a lot of people like crap. That's why popularity does not equal quality.
People that want to know what the fuss is all about, and do not want to reward mediocrity, can simply get it for free if they wish.

Can I ask you why you bought it? Caught up in the hype? Decided the Kindle price was low enough that you didn't really care if it was any good and just wanted to see what all the fuss was about?

I'm genuinely interested in how this particular publishing phenomenon came to pass, and whether it is likely to be repeated!

A pile of utter, utter bile of the highest order. Enjoyed often by sex deprived middle aged housewives, perhaps with a desire to class their hopelessly boring sex lives as 'kinky'.

My largest gripe is that is enforces the negative stereotype that all of us involved in the BDSM community are mentally damaged sociopaths - something that couldn't be more wrong. I go to fetish clubs all the time, you get everyone from Professional Dominatrixs to accountants to primary school teachers to doctors - and most of us are there for no purpose more sinister than it turns us on!

A few event organizers I know have had to go invite only thanks to this sodding book! Mr and Mrs bland want to come to have a go at the kinky stuff and get somewhat terrified when they see someone indulging in some needle play or hard CP.

All in all. Die. Just Die. You horrible piece of literature. You're not even fit for loo roll.

-------------------------------

All in all, i'm not the biggest fan

Not that that's a sweeping generalisation or anything ,and I knows it's backed by sound statistics

Haha that is an awesome review - love the bloke jumping out the window at the end! I have no intention of reading that book but I have also had concerns re. the sadistic, controlling, general a-hole nature of the male character and how women apparently find that romantic.

Purely hype - mostly friends on Facebook winking a lot and talking about it. I didn't know it was as bad as it was, I should have read the amazon reviews first at least or waited til someone I know who has good taste books said it was any good.

I got it from the google market place on my phone, 3.95 I think I paid.

I think they just imagine the good looking, tanned, rich 27 year old who is good in the sack and dont see the rest. Shallow much?

I guess that pic of George Contanza should put a dampen on the excitement.

Bought this for my 16 year-old daughter today as she says all her mates are reading it. Has sold 31 million copies worldwide apparently. £3.68 isn't bad.

I read the first couple of pages on Amazon. She even uses the old cliched 'character looks in mirror and describes her looks' technique.
