A one joke (if that) act who somehow had a long career.

Some people are easily amused.

I wonder if the Parkinson incident helped give them their longevity.

I remember it, some of the people who he kept attacking with Emu all the time, must have got well annoyed though

Shame he fell off his roof and died

If he hadn't died, he'd have probably had a comeback by now, doing an ironic adult version of his old child's act!

He had appeared on Lee & Herrings' "Fist of Fun" and was due to feature on their next show, so an ironic "student land" tour à la Frankie Howerd beckoned.
I did feel for Rod in the way the TV suits decided he was "out of fashion" when the kids seemed to still appreciate him.

Prior to the god awful Pink Windmill stuff, Rod and Emu starred in the somewhat fantastic Emu's Broadcasting Company. There is a clip in this bit of 'TV Heaven Telly Hell':

Clearly this is Michael Parkinson in disguise here!

I think a deserving case for Emu to get you by the neck and spin you around onto the floor until all dignity has left you!

I remember EBC1 and it was great. Saw a clip on TV Ark or somewhere which said it was 1976, and could not believe it.
Also, am I right in thinking that Billy Dainty often appeared on that show with Rod and Emu?

What a terrible way to go, trying to adjust your TV aerial to watch a Manchester United football game. Awful.

He and that silly bird were a terrible act and as funny as a compound fracture of the tibia.

"There's somebody at the door. There's somebody at the door."

Which myself and a group of housemates shouted about 20years ago while going to answer the door while at university only to find the Asian landlord standing outside...looking very puzzled...

It was funny when a TV biography had someone reminiscing about how Rod became quite prima donna-ish at times about getting everything just so, which was quite funny, given his act was basically just him roughing people up with a puppet bird on his arm!

Didn't help he'd just brought a big house and got hit for a big bill for back-taxes, as well!

How disrespectful of people on here to make jokes about his death.

I always felt Rod was a great physical comedy actor.

I saw her as herself(Carol) introducing Dollar at the Night Out Theatre Restaurant in Birmingham. She certainly milked her Grotbags role!

you are aware ITV did gave Emu a Comeback with two series on the CITV Channel in 2009 and 2011 with Rod's son taking over.
