I long for the days of simple gaming

Yet another casualty of the long games, with missions etc...

I don't recall anyone dying while playing a megadrive or SNES.

While we are at it, when you buy a game you should be buying the whole game, not 3 quarters of it, then have to buy enhancements, add ons etc... When did that craze start? With the economy the way it is something has to give soon!

The lad played it for 40 hours straight. If he didn't eat, sleep whatever thats his fault. Sorry I don't mean to sound cold hearted. We all have long gaming sessions but thats just ridiculous. Its addiction and addiction can lead to death whether its alcohol, drugs or whatever.

Maybe the answer is that every 4 hours the game saves, then shuts down for 15 - 20 minutes before being able to get activated again. A lot of people might think its stupidity but I can't help feeling perhaps he just wanted to escape and there was a bit of self destruction going.

I don't agree with people who say "it was his own stupidity" man does silly things. Should we just leave drug users and alcoholics to it? their own stupidity?

No, it's an addiction added to stupidity.

I did a marathon when Gears 2 was released. Horde has a lot to answer for. More than 70 hours. But I had the sense to get up walk around, eat and drink water. A lot of marathons are fuelled by energy drinks and/or coffee and without food this can lead to renal failure or heart failure.

When i got Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII i was so excited i put it on as soon as it arrived in the post and i play it for about 30-35 hours straight but by the end the in game clock only said 25 hours because i was smart enough to take regular breaks

To play for 40 hours and die is stupidity, gaming is not a drug like heroin, where if you go cold turkey you die, gaming has and off button and i have no sympathy if you are stupid enough not to use it

It's probably not actually. I'm not 100% sure if applies to diablo 3 yet but what happens across asia is young lads like him are paid to 'farm gold' and other things that have value then fill his quota for people who he works for, then get paid small some of money.

Nothing to do with 'simple' games, you can play space invaders for 40 hours non stop if you wanted to...its someone addicting to gaming, regardless of the game. I remember this problem first in the eighties, where people would play the same game(simple game) over and over to beat their best score. The Daily Maul(who else) ran articles about the health effects of prolonged computer gaming.

No but at the same time he was in an Internet Cafe, I'm sure they had no problem taking his money without realising the problems to actually do something about it.

Neglecting basic human needs for a videogame is ridiculous.

There are lots of people who have died in similar circumstances, the earliest being Berserk from 1981 where two kids died at the arcades, and I think I recall someone in Korea dying from playing Star craft. There was a couple who failed to feed their dauhter as they were too busy looking after their virtual baby in an inernet cafe. and various murders from arguements over MMORPGs
