iPad 3 - Usb lead for charging from ac adaptor

I tend to sit on my sofa with my iPad and, for ease of use, it would be good to have this plugged in as the stuff I tend to use it for drains the battery quickly. Unfortunately, Apple's usb leads are far too short for this as it won't stretch to the plug outlet!

I bought a 2 metre (third party) one, but it doesn't seem to work with the Ipad when plugged into the wall.It works fine when plugged into a computer, and it charges my iPhone from the wall without issue, but it doesn't seem to get enough power to my iPad from the wall.

Anyone had any luck with longer third-party USB power leads that can charge the iPad from the wall?

Edited as I misunderstood your post. If you mean you have a third pary power adapter then it might not be compatible with the 3rd generation iPad. The new iPad needs at least 10W to charge, and many third party adapters can't supply this much power. As a rule of thumb, if it doesn't state it's compatible with the new iPad you should assume it isn't.

I use a USB extention cable, like this one, with my 3rd generation iPad and the standard Apple power adapter to extend the reach of the cable and it works fine.

My experience with longer cables or extensions have not been great, they either don't charge the iPad fully or they take a lot longer than the official cable.

Apple recommends that you use an AC extension from your wall socket if the cable isn't long enough which is what I do and then you have no issues.

I'm not sure if this is something to do with the iPad requiring 2A rather than the standard 1A you get from a standard charger and possible current leakage in the USB cables.

I bought one of those to extend the reach of the cable for my Transformer and found it wouldn't charge.

I have found USB extension leads hit and miss with my transformer which I believe takes around 18W to charge. I did get an extension lead from the pound shop and that didn't work. I then got an extension lead from Aldi which was around £4 or £5 and is a lot thicker and that is working OK.
