It's probably not actually a scene - I bet it's just them in between takes.
Looking at the pic again and Ste isn't looking directly at Doug. Maybe Dougs asked him something & Ste can't look into his eyes or something probably reading too much into it.

I'm probably alone in that I don't think Doug's miserable all the time. I think he's just reacting normally to what he's going through. It's just that of course the old Doug wouldn't have really gone through this in the first place, and he wouldn't have handled it quite like this. But I think for the Doug who's on screen now, who's quite dependent on Ste for his own happiness, then I don't think he's being over dramatic.

I'm not.
He was very fun loving before, much more of a comedy character if I remember right. He may not remember who Bex is now, but back then I think her coming back and then being killed really changed the course of who he was. He became much more serious.
